About this event

The Wheatley School (East Williston, NY) Class of 1969 is holding a belated virtual 50th reunion, using the Zoom platform.

How can this be? I just turned 60!

Dream on. To quote one of our favorite teachers, Mel Rosenstein: "Time flies when you're having fun!"

Are you kidding? A virtual reunion?

Of course a virtual reunion will not provide the same degree of intimacy that an "in person" reunion would provide, but who knows when that can take place in light of the current COVID situation. A virtual reunion will allow more people to attend and will give us a chance to reconnect with old friends and classmates. Maybe it will lay the foundation for more contact in the future. It also could generate more interest in holding an "in person" reunion sometime next year.

The Class of '70 held their 50th reunion in June using Zoom and it was a huge success. We have met with the coordinators of their event and believe that we can benefit from their experience and suggestions. We see no reason why we cannot have an equally successful event. After all, we are The Wheatley School Class of 1969!

Here is what we are currently planning...

(This will evolve and you are welcome to provide suggestions)

  • Grand Opening - free for all - everyone can talk to one another - could be rather chaotic, but will be fun to see some old (literally) faces and say hi. This will probably last for 5-10 minutes.
  • Welcome
  • Memorial tribute to our class members that have passed
  • Special guests
  • The Class of '69 Speaks - all attendees will have the opportunity to speak for 2 minutes on the following topic: Tell us about a particular high school class, teacher, classmate, event or incident that was especially significant to you at the time or later in life. You are not required to talk, if you simply want to watch and listen to everyone else.

The co-hosts and MC will guide the event and the discussions.

There will be a chat window where you can send public messages to everyone or private messages to individuals.

Registration

When you register, you can provide (optional) a brief (no more than 1000 characters) personal statement. This statement can include biographical information, significant life events, a favorite high school memory, a favorite quote from a teacher - whatever you want. (To give you an idea of what 1000 characters represents, the two paragraphs in the "Are you kidding?" section (above) total around 800 characters.)

This web page is automatically (i.e., real time) updated with the first and last name of each person that has registered. We will also update this page when there is new information on the event or to add FAQs, so check periodically for updates.

After you register, you will get a confirmation email, containing all of the registration information that you provided. We recommend that you save this email for future reference.

We have developed an event guide and it was sent to all registrants on September 5. Anyone that registers after September 5 will be sent the guide.

Let me explain why you really should register

We are encouraging everyone to register, even if you are not able to attend the event. The only required information is your name and email address. All other information on the form is optional. You can update any of the information that you provide. Here are various reasons why you should register:

  1. Registering will have a "snowball" effect. Registrations will result in more registrations. The herd theory...
  2. If you decide at the 11th hour that you want to attend, you will not have to scramble to get all of the information that you will need.
  3. You can be included in the registration listing that is being sent to all registrants. This is your option, it is not required.
  4. You will be sent the registration listing that will go to all registrants. For sure, you want to see the personal statements from your classmates.
  5. You can provide a video that we will play at the event if you are not able to attend.
  6. When you register, there is a place where you can submit any questions or suggestions that you have for the event.
  7. You will not get any more annoying emails from us requesting that you register for this event.

The big day!

Registration will end at noon on the day of the event and shortly after that all registrants will be sent a roster of everyone (unless you opted out) that has registered for the event. The roster will include First Name, Last Name, Email Address, Current Location (optional) and Personal Statement (optional). We understand that everyone has different privacy concerns, so when you register, you can indicate if you do not want to be included in the roster.

The Zoom url will not be published on this page for security reasons. It will be emailed directly to everyone who has registered.

You've got questions? We've got answers!

Q1: Do I need an Eventbrite account to register for the reunion?

A1: No, you can register without creating an account. It will make it easier to update your registration information if you have an account (see Q3), but it is not necessary.

Q2: I am not real technical and Zoom scares me. I am concerned that I will not be able to use it properly and that you will hear me when I take a bathroom break.

A2; You are not alone (well, hopefully in the bathroom you are) when it comes to using Zoom and we are developing a custom guide that will be sent to all registrants. It will contain information on initial Zoom setup as well as tips that will help you during the event. Here is a tip - don't bring your computer into the bathroom.

Q3: I registered and would like to change some of the registration information? Specifically, I want to change my registration status and/or my personal statement?

A3: See the event guide referenced above.

Q4: I see the names of the people that have registered, but how do I know if they are planning to attend or not?

A4: I was expecting someone to ask that. First of all, you realize that people's status can change. We are not going to publicize people's status. However, when you register, if you are not able to attend, put an asterisk at the end of your last name (e.g., John Doe*). That will inform others that you are not able to attend. If you wish to add or remove the asterisk after you have registered, see Q3 above.

Q5: I see "Follow" buttons on the main web page and on the registration page. What happens if I click it? Will I automatically be notified when there are any changes to the web page?

A5: No, the Follow button serves no purpose on our page. We tried (unsuccessfully) to get them removed. You can ignore them.

Q6: I registered and I must have accidentally deleted the confirmation email that I received. It is possible to have it resent?

A6: Sure - just contact Mark and he will have it resent. There will be a 25 cent service charge :)

Q7: Who should I contact if I have other questions about the reunion or issues with Eventbrite?

A7: You should contact Bill Kirchick (WKIRCHICK@NUTTER.COM) or Mark Goldberg (GOLDBERGMARKL@GMAIL.COM). If you have a "technical" question don't even think about contacting Bill.

Q8 [NEW! added 7/29/20]: I would like to attend the reunion as an "observer" - can I do that?

A8: Of course. You do not have to speak and you do not have to appear "on camera". It is perfectly fine if you simply want to listen to the event without actively participating.

Below are the names of the people that have registered. The asterisk at the end of the last name indicates that the person is not able to attend.
