History of Ireland

The history of Ireland is nicely summed up in the tongue-in-cheek toast, “Here’s to the Irish, who never knew what they wanted, but always fought darn hard to get it.” So, what did the Irish want? We will explore the colorful history of Ireland, starting with the ancient Celts and St. Patrick, then the Vikings, the Normans, English conquest, the Plantations, and the origins of Catholic vs. Protestant conflicts. What was the Potato Famine and how did it create Irish-America? How did independence (for part of Ireland) from England lay the foundation for the Troubles in Northern Ireland? Finally, we look at the Good Friday Accords that ended the violence in the north and why Brexit threatens to undo all that.
