13 Harlem High Schools Named Among Best In America, NY

More than a dozen Harlem public schools made it onto the much-scrutinized Niche rankings, which were released Tuesday. Here's which ones.

HARLEM, NY — Harlemites have much to be proud of in their neighborhood, and a new ranking adds one more item to that long list: top-tier schools.

The website Niche released on Tuesday its annual lists of the best public and private high schools in America, based on metrics like test scores and academic performance, data from the U.S. Department of Education, as well as ratings from students, parents and alumni.

Three Harlem public schools were named among the best in the nation, while another 13 qualified as some of the best in New York state. Here they are:

Niche's separate list of the top private schools did not include any in Harlem.

The publication's new 2023 Best Schools and Districts rankings provide insight for parents on 92,743 public schools, 30,112 private schools and 11,820 school districts nationwide, according to the website.

Elsewhere in the city, the Upper West Side's Trinity School was named New York's best private school, and the sixth-best in the U.S.

The nationwide top spot on the private-school list went to Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. — its third straight year topping the list.

This year's best public school, meanwhile, is the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, N.C., which led the list for the first time ever.
