Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand applauded President Biden for nominating Jeannette Vargas to serve on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Gillibrand recommended Vargas to President Biden earlier this year.

“I am proud and grateful that President Biden has nominated Jeannette Vargas to serve on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York,” said Senator Gillibrand. “With more than two decades of service in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Ms. Vargas is an expert in complex civil litigation, handling cases ranging from significant financial fraud investigations to Chapter 11 proceedings, and also has a distinguished record of working to protect and strengthen the civil rights of the LGBTQ community. Ms. Vargas is well-qualified, sharp and fair-minded, and I urge the Senate to move swiftly to confirm her.”

Jeannette Vargas is an assistant U.S. attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and has served as the deputy chief of the Civil Division since 2016. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Ms. Vargas clerked for then-Judge Sonia Sotomayor on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Previously, Ms. Vargas was an associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett.

Ms. Vargas received her J.D. from Yale Law School in 2000 and her B.A., magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1995.
