Biographical / Historical note:Sir Richard Francis Burton was an English explorer, soldier, geographer, writer, and translator. He is best known for his English translation of the Arabian nights, and he wrote books and articles on a wide range of subjects including fencing, travel, and ethnography.

Summary:Autograph manuscript essays, notes, corrected proofs, annotated articles, and correspondence by Sir Richard Francis Burton. Included are bound corrected proofs of Supplemental Nights to the Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night, Volume VI (1888) with an autograph manuscript letter from Burton to "Mr. Edwards" laid in; The Book of the Sword (1883); and Nur al-Din Ali of Damascus and the Damsel Sitt al-Milah (1886). Also included is an autograph manuscript and reprint of Burton's article, Three Months at Abbazia (1888); correspondence between Burton and unidentified correspondents (1875-1886, undated); three manuscript and typescript letters from Burton's wife Isabel Burton to Douglas and Catherine Murray (1894, undated); autograph manuscript notes and drawings by Burton; and a cabinet photograph of Burton in fencing attire.
