Hi,
How is windows narrator compared to JAWS and NVDA?
I realize I'm opening up a can of worms, but I need the information for a presentation.

Hi! This is a great question, and I can give you some good information! I use Narrator more than I do JAWS, and 60 percent as much as NVDA. Of course, this is using Windows 10 1809 build, and Narrator is even a little better in the insider builds relating to the next build, 1903. Here is just a little of what I use Narrator for. One: I do everything on the Internet with Narrator using Chrome and MS Edge browsers. Two: I use Narrator to do everything with my emails in the Windows 10 Mail app! Three: I use Narrator with the following Windows 10 apps: The News app, Twitter app, The weather app, the Skype app, Mail, Calendar, and People apps. I write tutorials with Narrator using Notepad and Google docs using Waterfox. Narrator also works well with Waterfox browser. I use Narrator to navigate all of Windows 10 including the settings app, start menu, control panel, and much more. I use Narrator a lot, to get NVDA and JAWS to start again. Sometimes, JAWS and NVDA lock up, and Narrator gets me out of a lot of jams. I have used Narrator twice, to reset both of my laptops to factory defaults. Narrator is a pretty good screen reader, now, I believe. I would put NVDA first, then Narrator, then unbelievably, JAWS third. I only use JAWS for a couple of tasks. JAWS does not work with hardly any of the Windows 10 apps, but Narrator does. I hope that helps you do your presentation. Email me off list if you need anymore help! What version of JAWS do you have and what Windows 10 apps doesn’t it work with? I find JAWS works with Windows 10 apps better than NVDA. All the best

THank you for the information.
I'm trying narrator now to get a better feel for it, but I'm having trouble navigating word documents. It doesn't want to read the text in the document. Is there something special you have to do with Microsoft word to make it read the documents?

Hi.
To read a Microsoft word document with Narrator I think you have to press
caps lock plus R. That will start reading from the Narrator cursor.

What version of Windows are you using? and
not just a version like Windows 10, but the subversion, if there is such a
word. Narrator has changed dramatically over time in Windows 10.

What I'm trying to do is read the body of the document, but all I seem to be able to do is access the menus and ribbons.

If you can't up and down arrow in Word and read,
then no other commands will allow you to read. In an article I found about
Narrator, dated sometime in the summer of 2018, Word is used as an example when
reading documents is discussed. What version of Word are you
using?

I am running Win10, Version 1809, Home, 64-bit and just tested with Word 2010 and Word 2016. Narrator will not read document text in Word 2010, but will read it in Word 2016. This is really not surprising, as Microsoft is not going to try to reach into the wayback machine to ensure infinite backward compatibility between Narrator, which came on the scene with Windows 8, and versions of Office that far predate that OS. If someone has Word 2013 it would be interesting to know whether Narrator works with it. This was the first version of Word that has a "look and feel" that's very similar to that in use today. --

As an interesting aside I find the Guide to Narrator that comes up when you use it the first time (and will come up again unless you check the checkbox on the first screen telling it not to) quite useful. The Narrator Key is either CAPS LOCK or INSERT, so very familiar to JAWS or NVDA users (probably Window Eyes, too, but I haven't touched it in too long to remember). The Narrator+F1 sequence brings up a searchable list of all Narrator commands and Narrator+1 does a learning mode. I really need to start working with Narrator more intensively. --

Do you guys know if Windows 7 had Narrator? I had a windows 7 machine but I can’t recall if it had Narrator.
