CONGRESSMAN JOE MORELLE CALLS ON HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN JIM JORDAN TO TAKE ACTION ON DEEPFAKE PORNOGRAPHY

February 14, 2024

In the wake of recent incidents, Morelle urges immediate consideration of his bipartisan bill, the Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act

(Washington, D.C.) — Today, Congressman Joe Morelle (D, NY-25) called on House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R, OH-4) to address the disturbing trend of sharing digitally-altered explicit images by taking action on his legislation, the Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act. Numerous recent incidents involving deepfakes, including those of Taylor Swift, underscore why the Judiciary Committee must consider Congressman Morelle’s legislation immediately.

“The facts are clear—easily accessible artificial intelligence technology has made it possible to create and distribute realistic, sexually explicit imagery of anyone without their consent,” wrote Congressman Morelle in his letter. “Congress must not stand on the sidelines while deeply destructive deepfakes continue to proliferate across the internet. I urge the Committee to formally consider the Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act.”

Congressman Morelle’s bipartisan legislation—which now has 40 co-sponsors—was referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary in May of 2023, but has yet to receive formal consideration.
