Residential multifamily construction has been on the rise since 2011. During this time frame we have experienced significant construction fires in large wood frame buildings. This presentation will review the recent NFPA Research Report detailing construction fire statistics including occupancy type, leading cause, and month/time of day. We will follow the regulatory matrix and highlight the requirements for sprinkler and standpipe systems in buildings under construction. NFSA has worked this year on the 2022 edition of NFPA 241, The Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations. We will highlight several concerns from our members and the proposed changes associated with using temporary sprinkler and standpipe systems during construction.

The training will be taught by Michael Joanis. Michael Joanis, PE is the Director of Contractor Services for the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA). As part of the leadership team, he is responsible for delivery of technical services to our members. Mike is a University of Maryland, College Park fire protection engineering graduate and registered professional engineer in several states. He has over 28 years of experience as a partner for a sprinkler contracting firm and a department manager for an engineering consulting firm. He is a licensed sprinkler & special hazards contractor and active member of both SFPE and NFPA. Mike serves on NFPA 13, 20, 232, 241, and 909.
