US Highway 160 east of La Veta Pass paving to begin tomorrow

HUERFANO COUNTY — The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin six weeks of roadway resurfacing on US 160, east of La Veta Pass tomorrow morning.  

During this phase, crews will replace the roadway surface along all travel lanes and in pull-out areas, between MP 283.4 to MP 283.6. The work includes resurfacing of approximately 15 miles of roadway that will incorporate asphalt milling and repaving. Construction on the project began on June 6 with crews setting up the work zone and replacing sections of guardrail. 

“Resurfacing this portion of US 160 is moving along on schedule. We know the project may cause travel delays so we truly appreciate the cooperation and patience of the public while we make these improvements.” said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Rich Zamora. 

Work will begin on the west end of the project area, at the top of La Veta Pass in the eastbound lane. For six weeks, the work will progress with crews moving to the east end of the project at Colorado Highway 12. The project will improve and prolong the life of the road surface. A smooth road or highway has many important benefits including safer driving for motorists and improved quality for driving experience.

• Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.

• Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.

• Watch for workers. Drive with caution.

• Don't change lanes unnecessarily.

• Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.

• Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.

• Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.

• Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

• Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.

• Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
