A NOTE FROM THE GUILD OFFICERS

Get Into The Flow

Welcome, as we enter our eighth year as a nationally recognized knitting Guild through the auspices of The Knitting Guild Association, the LKGM continues on our commitment to provide education for every knitter at any level. This year’s scheduling will have events involving member, local, and nationally recognized speakers. As we learn and challenge ourselves, we move closer to attaining a flow state. What is a flow state? It is the sweet spot where something new meets something routine. When we engage, we find that time has passed and we feel good.

On that same note (feeling good), members have clamored for a return of April C.'s Festive Round Robin. The details for this member exclusive event will be announced at our November 5th Guild meeting. See details below for our member-led new Breakout stitch work session. Debbie S. has taken charge of our new monthly "Free-To-You Table" so keep reading below for those details. And hold onto your kolorful keps, Kate Atherley, will be joining us in February 2023 at our annual Knock Your Knitted Socks Off (KYKSO) event.

As always, bring your ideas and energy to make our Guild the best as we enter into the Flow!

I love to knit and knitting is the new yoga,

~Yvonne~

A NOTE ABOUT THE MEETINGS:
Over the past couple of years, there has been the need for the Board to make last minute decisions about location and type of meetings (in person or via zoom). The best way to make sure you have the most up to date information is to check the events page of our website:
https://www.lighthouseknitguildmaine.com/events
We will also post on our Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=lighthouse%20knitting%20guild%20of%20maine
And on our Ravelry Forum:

Announcing a New Feature at our Guild Meetings

Our "Free to You Table"

Beginning with our November meeting, A "Free to You Table" will be available at our in-person meetings. Members will be able to leave no longer needed/loved knitting books, patterns, yarn, knitting notions and UFO's while freeing up their space at home. At the end of the meeting, anything left on the table will be donated to charity and/or recycled locally.
What a great way to "FREE" up space in our homes, while helping out our fellow knitters and our community!

A Member-led BREAKOUT session at the GUILD

Add a new stitch and pattern technique to your knitting toolbox!

During our November 5th meeting we will breakout into a group of 10 members to learn and play with the Creel stitch. This pattern technique is made in the round, perfect for hats, cowls, mittens, and sweaters.
Signup will be on our website: lighthouseknitguildmaine.com  for the session and what is needed.

Chicken Yarn
~ by Claire B.~

I've been thinking a lot lately about chicken yarn. You read that right. Chicken yarn, not yarn chicken.  After one of my shifts at our table at the Cumberland Fair a few weeks ago, I walked around the fair grounds to take in the animals.  I started in the chicken barn and was stunned by the colorful beauty of the birds.
A few years ago, I read an interview with Alice Starmore, the remarkable Scottish yarn designer and textile artist.  Growing up on the Isle of Lewis in the Hebrides, Starmore came to have a deep understanding of color in nature.  "The land and seascapes of my island home contain more than enough wonder for a lifetime of creativity; there is a cornucopia of colour, pattern and texture from which to draw inspiration," she wrote on her website alicestarmore.com.  Her yarns and knitting patterns reflect this inspiration.

ImageTaking in the natural beauty of the chickens at the Cumberland Fair, the thought struck me, "WWAD?" What would Alice do? So, the next time I was at KnitWit, I selected four yarns at fit the chicken palette.  After reviewing a picture of the yarns at home though, and talking it over with Rachael E., I realized i needed a few more colors. So, I dove into my stash and pulled out two more.

I think my stash colors aren't quite what I want.  The turquoise needs to be greener and the rust lighter.  I'll have to do more extensive search next time I'm at KnitWit.  Or maybe I'll just have to learn to dye my own yarn like Alice!

Check out our table at the Cumberland Fair!  And special thanks to Jenny T. for sharing the pic!

Guild Meeting Memo

(from 10/3/22 meeting)
  • •Extra HUGE shout out to our Guild member volunteers for your hard work and dedication in working our table at this year's Cumberland Fair,  especially to Kristen I. for an amazing job coordinating! Also special thanks to those who worked extra shifts, those who taught and worked with all those kids on Ag Day, and those who helped with closing our booth on our final day!
  • A suggestion was made for our Guild to consider participation in the local Lion's Club Craft Show, which is held each October, and could be a nice fund raiser for the Guild. Several theme ideas were discussed.  Plans are to return to this topic in March to make a final decision by the craft show deadline at the of end of May.
  • To reflect both current and continuing need for the health and safety of everyone, Guild members agreed, when we meet in person during these colder months, face masking will be required for everyone.
