February 2024

Dear Community,

As we step into a fresh year and semester, we extend warm greetings to each member of our Pitt Public Health community! The beginning of a new academic term is always a time of renewal, growth, and exciting possibilities. This February, we also honor Black History Month, a time to celebrate the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black individuals throughout history.

CHE would like to shine a light on remarkable Black figures who have made significant contributions to public health and health equity. From the pioneering work of Dr. Charles R. Drew in blood transfusion to the advocacy of Dr. Joycelyn Elders for reproductive health. The work of Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first African American professional nurse, and Dr. David Satcher serving as the 16th Surgeon General of the United States, he focused on eliminating health disparities.

These individuals have not only broken barriers but have left a mark on the advancement of healthcare for all. Their efforts have paved the way for a healthier and more equitable future.

As we celebrate Black History Month, let's reflect on and appreciate the invaluable impact of these figures on public health and renew our commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system for everyone.

Sincerely,

Faculty and Staff at the Center for Health Equity, University of Pittsburgh
