OpenStudio Application in Action

New York State utility regulators have approved the second OpenStudio/EnergyPlus Standardized Simulation for use by ratepayer funded programs in their state. Standardized Simulations leverage the open source OpenStudio SDK and EnergyPlus to develop transparent methods for building and running EnergyPlus simulations. The first Standardized Simulation, Custom Measure Category 5, focused on residential building envelope load reduction, helping make homes heat pump ready. The second Standardized Simulation combines equipment cold climate air source heat pump modeled with equipment-specific performance characteristics with building envelope improvement and heat pump water heaters. These types of improvement benefit greatly from the advanced building and equipment physics modeling in EnergyPlus. These methods will be used to support load reduction and decarbonization efforts in New York State. The simulations were developed by OpenStudio Coalition partner Performance Systems Development (PSD). The U.S. Department of Energy gave PSD a Home Energy Score Innovation Award for the first Standardized Simulation in 2022. These methods make it easier to generate a Home Energy Score by leveraging the HPXML data standard.
In California, state regulators at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) have also begun the transition to EnergyPlus. Residential prototypes are available now, commercial in 2023. Thanks to the CPUC and the consultants that have made this possible. Access the GitHub repository here.
Lastly—for those working in the U.S.—keep an eye out for new programs continuously being announced, many of which leverage EnergyPlus and OpenStudio tools. Two great resources for a comprehensive list of programs are here for the IRA, and here for the Infrastructure Act.

Coalition Membership

Thank you to the contributors and testers of the latest OpenStudio Application release. In addition to the founding members, the OpenStudio Coalition is accepting membership from individuals and organizations. A broad coalition of support will be important as we continue to update and improve these applications based on the OpenStudio SDK to support equitable decarbonization in the built environment. OpenStudio Coalition members will ensure that OpenStudio Application and OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in user interfaces continue to be free and open source!
We’d like to hear from you!

What's New

The OpenStudio Application 1.5.0 release updates the application to OpenStudio 3.5.1, EnergyPlus 22.2.0.
International users will notice that this release includes a start towards translating the OpenStudio Application into a variety of languages. This is expected to be a large effort and we could use your help! We need users to provide translations for text (it is pretty easy!) and organizations to help provide resources for the underlying coding work needed to support internationalization.

New Features:

  • Update to OpenStudio SDK v3.5.1 and EnergyPlus v22.2.0
  • Add SetpointManager:SystemNodeReset:Temperature and SetpointManager:SystemNodeReset:Humidity by @jmarrec in #569
  • Add tab tracking with google analytics by @macumber in #564
  • Tab tracking is opt-in, and can be disabled at any time in the OpenStudio Application settings. The OpenStudio Coalition aims to collect anonymous usage statistics to help improve the OpenStudio Application. You can refer to our privacy policy for more information.
  • Style updates by @macumber in #540
  • Note: A new component called "Python bindings" is available for selection in the binary installers. For now, it will only install the python bindings in your application's folder, since support for Python Measures is still experimental in the OS SDK.
  • Update standards (add 90.1-2016 and 90.1-2019 library files) by @jmarrec in #587
More details on the bug fixes and developer changes can be found here.
The OpenStudio Application and OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in are funded by the OpenStudio Coalition members The Energy Coalition, PSD, VEIC, and EffiBEM. The OpenStudio Coalition has a strategic roadmap (here are the high level results) which prioritizes education and outreach to states, utilities, and higher education while ensuring the OpenStudio Application and OpenStudio SketchUp Plug-in user interfaces continue to be free and open source. To continue our efforts and provide additional support or training, please join us!
