Warm weather is FINALLY here!

As you hopefully know, last weekend was our first Connecticut LGBTQ+ Youth Conference! We would like to give a big shout out of thanks to our Producer Jahnice, our incredible youth curators and youth marketing team, and all of the speakers, workshop presenters, vendors, performers, and volunteers who worked so hard to make the conference a success! It really does take a village! It was so heartening to see so many brave young people come together to show their true colors. In light of all the recent attacks on LGBTQ+ youth across the country, the weekend was a beautiful reminder of just how strong, diverse, and resilient our community and our young people truly are!

HAPPY PRIDE MONTH! There are an absolute TON of community events going on this year-- too many to list them all. We have highlighted a few Pride events below that NHPC will be attending, but check out this great guide by CT Insider for a more comprehensive listing of upcoming Pride events across the state.

Though PRIDE New Haven isn't until September, we've programmed a month full of panels, conversations, art exhibitions, and social events! In honor of Juneteenth, we are hosting a Day of Action : Racial Justice and Racial Equity in partnership with our friends at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas. Join us in-person at the Yale University Theatre on Sunday, June 12th for a free full-day program of panels, anti-racism and anti-bias workshops, a poetry reading by transgender poet and thought leader Andrea Jenkins, and a keynote address on "Health Equity and the Queer Racial Justice Movement" by Dr. Justin B. Terry-Smith, DrPH.

Racial justice is a priority for the Pride Center, and that framework informs all of our LGBTQ+ activism, advocacy, and programming. To keep the conversation going, we will host three additional panels this month that focus specifically on the intersections between race and queerness, including Trans and Latino/a/e, Puerto Rican and Queer, and Radical Queer Black Art. See below for more information!

We hope you are going to have a trumendous June and can't wait to celebrate with you!

In solidarity and service,

Call for Peer Mentors!

Mentors are needed for the Peer Support Network, a state-wide mentorship program for LGBTQ+ youth ages 16-24! Mentors use their own lived experiences to help LGBTQ+ youth identify goals and advocate for themselves. Peer mentors are typically close in age with the young people they work with, though prospect mentors of all ages are invited to apply. Youth who are interested in joining our Mentee Cohort should apply here

The first Dyke Night will take place at 168 York Street Cafe, Connecticut's oldest LGBTQ+ bar, on Tuesday, June 14th @ 6:00 p.m. Due to the nature of the location, this is a 21+ event.

Panel : Trans and Latino/a/e
TODAY, Wednesday, June 1st | 6:00p
This panel will be streamed live on facebook and YouTube

Queer Latino/a/e experiences are extremely under-represented in both the Connecticut and the national LGBTQ+ movement. This marginalization gets even deeper when it comes to nonbinary and transgender Latino/a/e individuals. In this panel, we will explore the intersections between being trans and Latino/a/e, talk with the community members to understand how their experience is both unique and universal, and begin to undo the erasure of trans identities in both the Latino/a/e community and the larger LGBTQ+ movement.

This conversation will feature perspectives from former political candidate Mia Lozada, youth advocates Alejandro Galarza, and Eryca and will be moderated by Center Community Impact Manager Ace Ricker.
Lez Take a Hike
Friday, June 3rd | 5:00p
Meet at East Rock Park at the corner of Orange St. and Mitchell Drive

We’re kicking Pride month off with a hike around East Rock park for queer non-men. We’ll be hiking through the park on the White Trail with a total distance of 1.11 miles. This trail is categorized as an easy to moderate hike. Please bring comfortable shoes/clothes, sunscreen,  water, bug spray, and whatever else you may need. Please plan to arrive at the corner of Orange Street and Mitchell Drive around 4:45p, as the group will be heading out at 5:00p sharp.

If you have questions about this program please email our Women's Program curator Suyane Oliveira.
Panel : What is Queer Art?
Tuesday, June 7th | 12:00p
This panel will be streamed live on facebook and YouTube

How do we define what queer art is? Is it queer because the subject is queer or because the artist is queer? Does queer art always have to tell stories of same-sex attraction or gender diversity? Can a landscape of rolling waves be queer art if it's painted by a queer person? Is it queer art if the subject is queer but the artist is not? And, when we consider a larger project like a film or a play, how many queer folks need to work on it in order for it to be queer art?

This conversation will feature perspectives from artists Ricky Mestre and Anne:Gogh, theater professor and artist Frank Borelli, and theater producer Hope Chávez and will be moderated by trans artist and NHPC Trans Program Curator Finn Lockwood
Day of Action: Racial Justice
Sunday, June 12th | 10:30 a.m. - 6:30p
Yale University Theater, 222 York St, New Haven
Also live on facebook and YouTube

The second of this year’s Days of Action will take place on Sunday, June 12th and is dedicated to racial justice and equity in the LGBTQ+ community. In this Day of Action, we will work to understand the ways that race and queerness intersect and discuss how we can continue to dismantle racism and the barriers that queer people of color face both in the LGBTQ+ community and in the world at large.

This year's Day of Action will feature panels on BIPOC entrepreneurship and queer Asian representation, anti-bias and anti-racist workshops, a poetry reading by transgender poet and thought leader Andrea Jenkins, and a keynote address on "Health Equity and the Queer Racial Justice Movement" by Dr. Justin B. Terry-Smith, DrPH.

Panel: Puerto Rican and Queer
Tuesday, June 14th | 12:00p
This panel will be streamed live on facebook and YouTube

Queer Puerto Ricans are often lumped into the larger Latino/a/e community. The reality, however, is that Queer Puerto Ricans have a very different experience of being LGBTQ+ than their Latino/a/e peers. Join us for the fourth installment of our Exploring the Queer Caribbean Experience series with a panel focusing on the unique experiences of queer Puerto Ricans both in the U.S. and in Puerto Rico.

This conversation will feature perspectives from LGBTQ+ Puerto Ricans from across the U.S. and will be moderated by artist/activist and Center Deputy Director Juancarlos Soto

"Protected and Served?": An LGBTQ+ Survey

On May 5th, Lambda Legal and Black & Pink National launched “Protected & Served?,” a community survey on LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV and their experiences with the courts and the criminal legal system. We need your help to reach all members of our communities including immigrants, sex workers, and those who are currently or were formerly in custody. The findings of the study will be used to create recommendations for reform, to educate the public, to support investment in communities harmed by the criminal legal system, and to support positive legal changes. The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete and is available in English and Spanish until July 8th. Online participants will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win $100.
