Shoppers News 12 Long Island spoke with on Saturday said they are concerned about their safety after a string of crimes at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City.
Five crimes were reported at the Garden City shopping center in the past two months. The latest happened Friday afternoon when police say three women and a man grabbed seven purses worth $23,000 from the Louis Vuitton store. The suspects used box cutters to remove security tags from the bags.
"If there's security inside that big store... how would something like that happen?" asked Franklin Square resident Bryanna Copeland.
The theft comes three weeks after Dwight Clermont was arrested for allegedly exposing himself and chasing two women in the mall's Kate Spade store.
In late March, police reported two GMC cars worth over $152,000 were stolen from the west parking lot of the mall.
In another incident, police say two women stole over $136,000 in jewelry from Ethan Jewelers.
Officers also arrested three men in March after police said stolen merchandise was found in their car during a traffic stop on Ring Road West.
"At Roosevelt Field, probably increasing security is something to consider because it's that many in a short period of time," said Maron Alemu, of Hempstead.
Many shoppers whom News 12 Long Island spoke with echoed the call for more mall security, including Lashae Williams, of Elmont.
"I'm scared for my welfare. My mom and I go there all the time. My niece goes there all the time and she's 13, like I'm very worried," Williams said.
News 12 Long Island reached out to the mall and Nassau County officials for comment about mall security. A mall spokesperson said they have no comment.
News 12 Long Island asked Nassau police on Saturday about the recent criminal activity. They responded on Sunday with a statement:
“The Nassau County Police Department continues to intensify patrols in all areas of concern in and around Roosevelt Field Mall for any potential criminal activity. The department also has a robust security detail of police officers and supervisors that are permanently assigned to the mall. All shoppers are reminded to always use due diligence and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Any suspicious activity should always be reported to 911 immediately.”
Shoppers like Williams said if and when they go to the mall, they will be on guard.
"Now I need to be more aware, more on top of things and my surroundings. Makes me nervous now," Williams said.
Police are still looking for the four suspects accused of stealing handbags from the Louis Vuitton store. They said the suspects fled in a 2012 white Kia Sportage.
Police are asking anyone with any information about this crime to give them a call.
