Dedicated To Jim Christina When we enter this life, we are each of us given a measure of life. For some, that measure lasts longer than others. What matters most is what we do with that measure we are given. Jim Christina lived his life to the fullest measure. Born James Lambert Christina in 1949 to an Air Force family he grew up in Del Mar, California when the family’s travels around the world finally ended. After graduating college, Jim served in the U.S. Army for a decade, returned to the States and joined his father’s paint business in the Pacific Northwest. It was then he began writing songs, both the music and the lyrics, and formed a band, Sundown, and the writing bug had firmly taken hold of him. An idea for a character, and a series of books, had been forming for years in Jim’s head and in 2008 he put them down on paper. What followed was several books set in the Old West, Jim being a historian as well as a poet, musician and a writer. Unlike Louis L’Amour, Jim’s stories of the Old West were, in his own words: “If you are looking for Louis Lamour, you won't find him here. If you are looking for a walloping good story, turn the pages (of my books) and start reading.” Jim wrote and published nearly twenty novels set in the Old West and a collection of his song lyrics, That’s All You Get. While Jim would never try to pick just one book as the best he’d written, his 2017 novel, Jonah Blue, was listed as required reading for a college history course. His follow up novel in 2019, Jefferson’s Chance, was an incredible story of a young man who lost his leg as a child, but never lost his dream of becoming a Texas Ranger. But he was not finished blazing his trail in the written world. In 2015 he had teamed up with Bobbi Jean Bell and created The Writer’s Block, a weekly one-hour radio show broadcast on LA Talk Radio. The show featured a different author every week, allowing that author to introduce their book to an audience that eventually grew to an overall listenership – live and on demand – of over 600,000 people every week from around the world. For Jim, meeting new authors and finding out about their works and how they approached the art of writing, fascinated him. Many of those authors quickly became long-time friends, including one who he would collaborate with on a novel as well as form a new publishing house. After writing The Last Lonely Trail with Richard Paolinelli, Jim merged his Black Dog Publishing with Richard’s Tuscany Bay Publishing. In 2017, Tuscany Bay Books was born – Jonah Blue was his first book released under the new publishing house - and would publish nearly 50 novels, books and anthologies involving nearly a hundred authors in five years. Jim Christina passed away at his home in Star, Idaho on June 19, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Gerry; his children, Joseph Christina, Margaret Christina Boyce, and Monica Hale Ferguson; his nieces Patricia Cunningham and Ginia Christina; his siblings: Wallace Christina, Margaret Christina Wells, Bonnie Christina Ingram and Patrick Christina; and his beloved dog, Bella; and an incredible legacy in the publishing world. Aimee Ravichandran, the owner of Abundantly Social, and Mickey Mikkelson, the owner of Creative Edge Publicity, ironically never envisioned working within a magazine, much less owning one, and yet, here we are!! With over 20 years combined working within the book and publishing industry, we are both excited and passionate about what Top Shelf means to us. We both know that the magazine was built as a forum dedicated to authors and was a huge influencer in the book publishing and promotion market. When discussions started about us adopting the magazine from the previous owners, Keith and Becky, we were both incredibly honored and extremely touched that they would even consider us, and we want to publicly issue a Thank You to both of them for not only believing in us but also trusting us with an entity that they worked so hard to build and preserve! Our dedication and support to them is to ensure that Top Shelf Magazine’s legacy continues by releasing professional mainstream content that focuses on the book industry as a whole. We want Top Shelf to be known as the Book Community magazine, and we want to cover all areas of focus, including independent publishing, traditional publishing, and leveraging and creating content for libraries, bookstores, and reader festivals, and ensure every genre is represented. The next steps are to rebuild our website, but we wanted to get the Top Shelf Awards Issue out as there have been a lot of patient authors waiting for the results. Finally, and this is probably the most important part of this is that we want to hear from you! The readers, writers, and really the book community as a whole. Because without any of you, we don’t have a magazine, and we are hopeful that each of you will join us on this book-related journey together! Rafael Hines Author of Bishop's Law Book Q&A with Author
Rafael Amadeus Hines Q: When did you begin to write your first story? My inspiration for writing the first novel in the Bishop series, Bishop’s War, came in several parts. The first was 9/11. But let’s call that tragic day a catalyst rather than something that inspired me. My office was in the South Tower and in the days following 9/11 many of us in New York City were bracing for follow up low level attacks that thankfully never happened. I started having very vivid dreams for months afterwards and one night a hero named John Bishop appeared out of nowhere and stopped an imaginary attack in a park near my house. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but the name and the dream would pop back up from time to time over the years. Fast forward a decade later and I was flying from New York to Houston for work and reading a bestselling airport thriller on the plane to pass the time. I’ve always been an avid reader and would often finish two or three novels a week, but I just couldn’t connect with this one. I finally put the book down in frustration and sat there thinking about the author’s choices and about writing in general and at that moment I opened my laptop and decided to try my hand at crafting a novel.
I’d never written anything before and I had no idea where to begin so I started by recounting all the insane experiences that me and my friends went through growing up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side (LES) during the rough and bloody 70’s and 80’s. The story was really just a bunch of random scenes without a plot or an outline. That said, the more I wrote, the more I enjoyed it and then one night nearly a year later the hero John Bishop reappeared on paper... only this time he was a Green Beret returning home from Afghanistan to stop a terrorist attack in Manhattan’s Union Square Park. The last and most inspirational part of this journey was my Mom. As I said, I had never written anything before and even though I couldn’t wait to fire up my laptop every night, Bishop’s War was just a late-night hobby. I was writing purely for my own enjoyment and not long after I “finished it” we found out Mom was terminally ill with only a few months to live. Before she passed she sent me a bunch of links on how to selfpublish and made me promise her that I would finishfinish Bishop’s War, throw a cool cover on it, post it on Amazon and see what happens.

After I self-published I fully expected to sell a hundred copies or so to friends and family and that would be the end of it. Promise to Mom check. Having my noveI strategically placed on my bookshelf next to Elmore Leonard, Tom Clancy, Stephen Hunter and John Sandford… check-check. Needless to say, the old cliché, Moms know, definitely applies here and I know she’s right here with me on this surreal journey that’s connected us with hundreds of thousands of readers from all over the world.
Q: Did your careers/life experiences help shape your stories? Absolutely. As I mentioned, I started writing about many of the crazy things that my friends and I went through as kids in the wild west days in Alphabet City and I continue to incorporate a lot of those experiences into my novels. The majority of the characters in the Bishop series are also roughly based on people I grew up with. My block was the gathering place where off duty cops, firemen, gunmen, gangsters, dealers and junkies all hung out and they were all incredible storytellers. When I write, especially when I’m writing dialogue, I usually hear their voices speaking to me. The same thing often happens when I write action scenes. I think back to the fistfights, knife fights and gun fights that were just part of daily life back then and it helps me get the action scenes flowing. On the opposite end of the spectrum my books are also love stories. All of us who survived LES/Alphabet City developed life-long bonds of love and loyalty to each other and love is definitely the foundational theme running throughout the Bishop series.

Q: Tell us, readers, what your thriller fiction novel, Bishop's Law, is about. Book one in the Bishop series, Bishop's War, is a fast-paced and action-packed suspense thriller that introduces us to Special Forces Sergeant John Bishop. Bishop is a decorated war hero, and nephew of the Lower East Side crime boss, Gonzalo Valdez. After returning home from Afghanistan Bishop's hopes for a peaceful future are quickly shattered when he is catapulted back into the global war on terror through a succession of lifethreatening events and corrupt intrigue. He battles against terrorist operatives in New York, a powerful Afghan warlord, and a psychopathic billionaire with powerful White House connections. When John’s uncle gets involved, he proceeds to treat John’s enemies to a bitter taste of mob vengeance. In Bishop's Law, the heart-pounding sequel, Bishop is pulled back into the war on terror when the president asks him to assemble a team to stop terrorists both foriegn and domestic.

Pivoting between New York's Lower East Side, the ever-changing location of ISIS terror cells and battles with the Russian mob, Bishop is forced to choose between family, love, and duty.
Q: How would you describe your hero, Sgt. John Bishop? John Bishop's strength of character was forged in fire after witnessing the murder of his parents when he was a boy and then being raised by his mob boss uncle on New York’s Lower East Side. A former Green Beret whose honor and loyalty to his country, his family, friends and his Special Forces brothers make him the hero that the CIA, DHS, the FBI and the even the President rely on to be the tip of the spear in the War on Terror.
Q: What themes will readers find in your novel, Bishop's Law? Honor, loyalty, family and love, combined with the brotherhood and sacrifice of those who serve are the foundational themes in all my novels. I've been blessed to have friends who are US Army, Navy, Marines, Airforce and Coast Guard veterans, and some who are still active duty, as well as buddies in law enforcement, who have all been kind enough to share real-life accounts of their selfless acts of heroism (they never call them that) with an unknown self-published author. As they continue to share their stories with me, I tend to blend them together and create new characters that are a melting pot of all these amazing men and women who sacrifice so much, and regularly put their lives on the line for complete strangers.

I'll add that as a novice self-published Black and Latino American author (who never served in the Armed Forces) writing Military thrillers, it's been beyond surreal to see the impact my books have had on active duty men, and women, and our Veterans. The direct messages, emails and reviews sent from Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Special Operators (often sent from combat zones and Forward Operating Bases) has been life changing for me. One of the greatest honors of my life was receiving an African rungu stick with my name engraved on one side and John Bishop on the other. The custom-made rungu was designed by an Army Special Ops team deployed to Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti Africa who read Bishop's War between missions... It doesn't get much better than that! In addition to the Military portion of the Bishop series, I write about predominantly Black and Latino heroes and anti-heroes. I loosely based many of the characters in my books on people I've met or grown up with and one of my goals as an author of color is to break through the traditional stereotypes that have dominated print, media, television and cinema for decades. The last thing I'll say here is that in my view and my experience, most if not all human beings are somewhat flawed and complicated. In other words, nobody is perfect. I've met heroes and villains from all walks of life. They come from different backgrounds, in all colors, genders and religions. I strive to capture that in my writing and I hope that my readers will come to love the characters in my novels as much as I do, despite their flaws... Flaws in the characters! Not you, the reader! :-)
Q: What other projects are you currently working on? I'm currently working on three separate projects. The first is book #3 in the Bishop series, the second is An LES Kid, a novel about growing up on New York's Lower East Side, and the third is the Bishop book to movie/book to series project.
Q: How did you get into the thriller fiction genre? I've had a love of reading for most of my life and early on I gravitated towards action-thrillers. Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn, Elmore Leonard, Walter Mosley, John Stamford and Stephen Hunter are just a few of my favorites and I've been honored and amazed by Bishop fans who've compared my work to those incredible and legendary authors.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring writers in your genre? My advice is just write. Write from your heart and keep writing until you find your voice. I started without any clear idea of a story in mind. I began by writing down/retelling stories about me and my friends and then a story outside of my own story started to take shape, and pretty soon my first novel, Bishop’s War, began to emerge. My point here is that you have to love the writing first. Have that as your foundation and see where it takes you. That’s my advice on the creative side. For the business side of things, it’s definitely a grind. I did a lot of trial and error trying to see what platforms might help me build and expand my audience. Twitter was really helpful for me, but like all social media platforms it’s time consuming and it can actually stifle your creative juices… at least it did for me. In a nutshell, keep writing while you put in the necessary work to find readers and build your platform.
