Center for Civil & Human Rights One of the first things you’ll learn at Gonzaga is that we’re deeply committed to social justice—solving complex problems and creating lasting, meaningful systemic change. Our interdisciplinary Center for Civil & Human Rights focuses on the law as an essential tool in the ongoing fight for equity. Each year, the Center sponsors a visiting law professor, puts on the Pursuit of Justice conference, and hosts speakers of national renown. Through these educational opportunities, you can learn how race influences criminal justice, advance border justice for immigrants, work on sealing juvenile records, and provide legal services to people of moderate means who might not otherwise have access to counsel. Additionally the Center’s certificate program allows you to focus on the study and analysis of civil and human rights, and the legal, theoretical, and policy perspectives associated with these rights.

Center for Law, Ethics & Commerce We believe that every Gonzaga graduate should be a person of integrity, curiosity, and creativity. Our Center for Law, Ethics, & Commerce helps students explore the law as it relates to business, technology, and innovation—and how each can be advanced in ways that are as good for a company as they are for humanity. The Center hosts expert speakers, serves as a research hub, and publishes a transactional law newsletter. As a student, you can participate in a national project affecting outcomes in commercial law issues; learn from experts about privacy, technology, regulation, and social media; and work directly with clients through the Business Innovation Clinic and the Federal Tax Law Clinic.

Clinical Legal Programs We love putting our knowledge to good use. To Zags, that means applying our skills and talents to serve others so that we are each stronger as a result. As one of the first law schools in the nation to require students to participate in handson clinical legal education, Gonzaga School of Law asks you to take what you learn in the classroom and put it into practice to serve our Spokane community and beyond. Managed by our experienced faculty members and supervised by practicing attorneys, our clinics are modeled after a general practice law firm. You’ll get exposure to a range of real-world legal activities, so that you graduate ready for success. CIVIL & HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCACY CLINIC Learn and apply the theories and strategies used by attorneys to identify, investigate, and challenge laws and policies targeting historically marginalized and traditionally disadvantaged groups.

Explore a Global Classroom We believe that to do good in the world, you must first explore it in all its diversity and dimension. Through intentional study, travel, and research, you can deepen your understanding of how to connect with and advocate for people of all cultures and experiences. By learning about legal practices across the world, you will gain a richer understanding of how to serve your future clients with an informed mind and open heart. GONZAGA LAW IN FLORENCE The centerpiece of our global programs, the Florence Summer Law Program takes place on Gonzaga’s stunning Florence campus in June of each year. This immersive program includes coursework on international human rights, restorative justice, comparative labor and employment law, and technology as it impacts oppressed and marginalized peoples.

Go for Big Wins Just a few weeks before Gonzaga men’s basketball beat UCLA in the Final Four, another Gonzaga team had arrived at a different kind of court. Each year, law students compete in regional and national “moot court” competitions that put legal knowledge and skills to the test in simulated court proceedings. Gonzaga’s team was up for the challenge, competing against four legal powerhouses from around the country. After months of preparation, the passion, dedication, and spirit that defines every Zag won out. Competitors Blake DeVerney, Joe Huston, and Josiah Alter were bestowed the Dolores K. Hanna Best Brief Award. As Team Caption Huston remarks, “It’s been ten months of challenging work, and what we have become is well worth the sacrifice.”

“When your faculty go out of their way to know you as an individual outside of your identity as a student, that’s not something you’ll find at other law schools. This is a pretty unique culture. The faculty want to see you succeed as an individual.” - KATIE HANDICK (’23)

Build Your Network Gonzaga is a close-knit community of people who want the best for—and from—each other. We actively support all the members of our Zag family, both during our time on campus and long after graduation. Of our 7,500+ alumni worldwide, some are currently shaping policy in the Senate, pursuing justice in the Washington State Supreme Court, protecting rights through the ACLU, managing business interests with corporate conglomerates, serving their country in the JAG Corps, and, of course, advocating for everyday citizens in endless ways. In addition to providing you with plenty of inspiration, the Zag Law alumni network can also help you further your career goals, connect to internships and employment openings, and get involved in mentoring the next generation of law students.

“I stopped looking at Gonzaga Law as an institution and more as a family.” -JOSH GRISSOM (’21)
