Ex-Iranian vice president Ataollah Mohajerani now lives in the UK. An academic and writer, he promotes “interreligious and intercultural dialogue” to online audiences of thousands. But he never talks about his book, Critique of the Satanic Verses Conspiracy, penned in the wake of the 1989 fatwa calling for the execution of author Salman Rushdie. In it, Mohajerani defended Ruhollah Khomeini’s demand for Rushdie to be killed for “insulting Islam” and gleefully satirized the harm he imagined had been caused to the writer’s own life as a result. This is our video report on that notorious chapter, the lethal impact the fatwa had around the world, and how Mohajerani benefitted from it.

This video is part of an IranWire series on overseas acts of terror sponsored by the Islamic Republic. You can watch the full set on our YouTube channel.
