THE MISSION

FASHFILMFETE™ is a film festival celebrating fashion storytelling, affording diverse persons the opportunity to showcase their works behind the camera that help a film come to life. Fashion is the one art form I believe everyone participates in and embraces, from designer to consumer—it has the potential to be a powerful unifier. Partnering with Phoenix Art Museum, which has one of the largest fashion collections in the country, to be our host venue for our inaugural year has been pivotal in developing this event.

THE PROBLEM

Women and people of color are disproportionately underrepresented in film and fashion, specifically behind the camera. Their roles as directors, writers and costume designers pale in comparison to their counterparts.

According to a study from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University:

  • Women
    • In 2020, women made up 19% of all directors, writers, executive producers, producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the watched at home films, which was slightly lower than the 21% achieved on the top grossing films.

  • Roles
    • Director - 15.1%
    • Writer - 17.4%
    • Costume Designer (According to Zippia) - 74.4%

According to a UCLA study:

  • People of Color
    • As of 2019, people of color remained underrepresented on every industry employment front.
  • Roles
    • Director -  15.1%
    • Writer - 13.9%
    • Costume Designer (According to Zippia)
      • White - 59.6%
      • Hispanic/Latino - 15.2%
      • Asian - 13.2%
      • Black/African American - 6.3%
      • Unknown - 5.0%
      • American Indian/Alaskan Native - 0.7%

THE MARKET

"The minority share of the U.S. population is growing by nearly half a percent each year. Constituting 40 percent of the U.S. population in 2018, and slightly more in 2019, people of color will become the majority within a couple of decades."

This means there will be a higher demand for films reflecting a diverse view point. Women and people of color tend to develop content hire teams with this in mind.

THE GOAL

To solve the problem we have created a festival, which has received more than 40 submissions from around the world including the Italy, France, Isreal, France, India, and United States, among others. We have also built a team reflecting the gender and cultural diversity that is needed to attract and curate works from diverse creatives, as well as developed a streaming service to showcase all the films accepted into the festival. This will give these diverse creatives a platform to showcase their work among their peers and earn revenue on their projects while they seek larger distribution for their films.

The funds that we receive from this campaign will be used for activities during the festival such as a photo and video shoot with a nationally recognized photographer and author, travel and board expenses fort of state panelists, licensing of our mainstream feature film, awards for the first and second place winners in categories including: Feature, Documentary, Short, fashion Ad/Music Video, Student, Costume, and Makeup.

THE TEAM

Founder, Mignon A. Gould

Headshot of FashFilmFete Founder

I’ve been intrigued about the role of fashion in film since watching two of my favorite sartorially impactful films, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961) starring Audrey Hepburn and Mahogany (1975) starring Diana Ross. Both featured charismatic characters, with a penchant for style. I was introduced to these films long after they made their silver screen debut, but they have lived on in my mind, as they have in popular culture.

It wouldn’t be too farfetched to say that these films sparked a love for cinema style, and led me to launch TheChicSpy.com, an online style and entertainment magazine. The popular site featured interviews with film insiders such as actors Emma Stone, Selma Hayek and Octavia Spencer, as well as costume designers such as Michael O'Connor (Jane Eyre), Madeline Fontaine (Jackie) and Catherine Martin (The Great Gatsby).

As a Black woman, I couldn't help but notice the lack of representation not only in front of the camera, but in front of it too. Inspired to change that narrative, I decided to launch FashFilmFete to celebrate my (and others') love for fashion in film, while creating a platform that also encourages, welcomes and actively seeks films from women and people of color—specifically directors, producers, writers and costume designers.
