Huizenga: Iran Finances Roughly 93% of Hamas

Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI), Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, held a hearing examining how the Iranian Government moves money to finance terrorism.

During the hearing, Huizenga brought up how the Biden Administration’s pursuit of the “Iran Nuclear Deal” has allowed a backsliding of sanctions on Iran. This misguided pursuit by the Biden Administration has in turn granted the Iranian regime access to billions of dollars that it can then utilize to support horrific acts of terror like those committed by Hamas that claimed more than 1,400 lives in Israel.

Huizenga specifically honed in on the astonishing amount of financial support Hamas receives from Iran. “Three weeks ago, Hamas committed a brutal terrorist attack on the State of Israel, where 30 Americans tragically lost their lives,” said Congressman Bill Huizenga. It is important to note, Hamas receives approximately $350 million dollars per year in support from Iran or roughly 93% of their total funding.”

Huizenga closed his opening remarks by clearly stating there should be no ambiguity regarding the danger posed by Iranian backed terrorism and the need for America to stand with Israel.  “Let me close with this. I know there [are] a lot of different opinions about what is happening in Gaza and with the Palestinians and with Israel, but we should all agree, that innocent civilians should not be used as political cover,” stated Huizenga.Make no mistake. Hamas is no friend to the Palestinian people in my opinion and the Iranian regime is no friend of ours. We must not waver in our support for our ally Israel.”

Earlier this month, Congressman Huizenga introduced the No U.S. Financing for Iran Act. This legislation is designed to severely limit the Iranian regime’s ability to support terrorism by blocking the Iranian Government from accessing the U.S. Financial System.

Last week, the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee launched an investigation to better understand the Biden Administration’s decisions regarding economic sanctions on the Iranian regime. The letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen can be found here.
