42% frontline workers have got first dose of Covid vax

With close to 1.2 crore vaccine doses administered till Tuesday evening through more than 2.5 lakh sessions, 64.7 lakh health and over 41.1 lakh frontline workers received the first shots.

New Delhi: India has vaccinated around 42% of registered frontline workers with the first dose of Covid-19 jabs with nine states achieving a more than 60% coverage since February 2, when inoculation of this category was initiated.
Among healthcare workers who have completed four weeks since receiving the first dose of vaccines, 62% had been given the second shot till Tuesday, official data shows. India’s vaccination programme began on January 16.

With close to 1.2 crore vaccine doses administered till Tuesday evening through more than 2.5 lakh sessions, 64.7 lakh health and over 41.1 lakh frontline workers received the first shots. Besides, around 13.2 lakh health workers received the second dose of the jabs. Among the better performers are 10 states and Union territories, including Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Telangana, Gujarat and Tripura, that have vaccinated over 75% of eligible health workers with the second dose.

Pondy, Punjab laggards in vaccination

Nine states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, MP, Odisha and Himachal Pradesh, have inoculated over 60% of its frontline workers with the first dose within 21 days from February 2.

The Centre expressed concern over Puducherry and Punjab that have inoculated less than 40% of registered health workers with first dose of vaccines. The health ministry has written to states witnessing a surge in cases and a higher positivity rate to expedite vaccination of health and frontline workers in specific districts as they are involved in containment, surveillance and management of Covid-19.

Health secretary Rajesh Bhushan mentioned that 12 states and UTs, including Rajasthan, UP, MP, Gujarat and Odisha have administered the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to over 75% of their registered health care workers. Eleven states and UTs including Karnataka, Telangana, Delhi, Punjab and Chandigarh have inoculated the first dose to less than 60% of registered health care workers.
