Mask Guidance

Correct and consistent mask use remains a critical tool that we can use to prevent getting and spreading COVID-19. It is important to remember that any mask is better than no mask. Masks are strongly recommended.

Where masks are strongly recommended

  • Schools
  • Hospitals and health care facilities
  • Long term care facilities
  • Shelters
  • Correctional facilities
  • Congregate living facilities
  • Crowded settings

It is important to wear a mask when you are sick or caring for someone who is sick with COVID-19.

Wearing a mask does NOT take the place of physical distancing.

Masks are most effective when combined with keeping distance from others.

Use and care: Wear a clean mask. Wash cloth masks between uses.

Masks are not recommended for everyone. This may include children under two years old, people with respiratory issues, anyone unable to remove their mask without help, and those with a medical condition, mental health condition or disability.

How to choose a face mask

Couple wearing masks

When choosing a mask, check how well it fits, how well it filters air, and how many layers it has.

DO choose masks that

  • Completely cover your nose and mouth
  • Fit snugly against the sides of your face and don’t have gaps
  • Have a nose wire or adjustable straps to prevent air from leaking out of the mask
  • Have two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric

DO NOT choose masks that

  • Easily slip off your face
  • Are damp, dirty or damaged
  • Have exhalation valves or vents which allow virus particles to escape
  • Are made of fabric that makes it hard to breathe, for example, vinyl

Mask protection tips

  • Knot and Tuck ear loops of a 3-ply mask (Go here for video instructions: https://youtu.be/GzTAZDsNBe0)
  • Pick a design you like, that is comfortable
  • Add Layers of material (use a cloth mask that has multiple layers of fabric or wear a disposable mask underneath a cloth mask)
