Does anyone have experience replacing an oil pressure gauge (or any gauge, really) from the lower helm station? It appears I have to disconnect the wheel and remove the whole dash to get to the back of the gauge. It does not appear there is any way to access the back of the gauge from below, even if you pull the refrigerator out.

Hello:

As the owner of a 1985 37, I have given this topic some thought.  I have heard the dash is either hinged or removable.  You don’t have to remove the wheel as the steering pump is bolted to the backside of the dash and should come up as one piece.

I took all the screws that seem to hold the dash in place as well as those of the structure below it out, but I could not get it to budge.  It is either very heavy or there are other less obvious fasteners.

Since the only instrument I replaced was at the upper helm, I have put this topic off for now.

Last Fall I replaced the refrigerator, and I can verify that does not give you any access to the underside of the dash.  The fridge removal/replacement is a bear but I won’t go into that.  It can be done without disturbing any cabinetry but takes 3 strong men.

As Jim Maddox states below, I too have tried removing my dash searching for a phantom fuse.  And had the same issue of it sticking so stopped before I fractured it.  Talking to those who have done this successfully it’s not a lost cause.  My helm panel has the original vinyl covering and I’m assured the dash is just imbedded into it from age, Sun etc.  So with a mini pry bar(s) and using several thin shims as you go it should come loose.  Some earlier models were hinged at the base, mine is not.

I’m speaking third person here because I haven’t got back to this project…coming winter.  I have docking lights which have lost power many years ago and I’m told there are likely fuses on the backside of the dash.

Thanks for the tips, Jim. I haven’t taken the screws out yet, but looks like it is heavy. I don’t see anything that looks like a hinge. The refrigerator replacement is coming soon. I’ll probably circle back to you for tips on that later.
