It's really a pity. 
The desertification of Reading town centre is proceeding steadily: if you do not have a car becomes difficult even to buy a simple screwdriver. there are no hardware stores left in the town centre.

While not as good, Wilko is still there in Broad Street Mall (I think)

Also if you can cycle as far as Scours' Lane, Screwfix and Toolstation do the business.

Oxford Road has Wickes.

If you live in Caversham there is the Hardware store on the corner of Prospect Street and they are always very helpful.
You can park in the waitrose car park if driving.

In Caversham (north of the river) there is a small Ironmonger shop, obviously it's got limited stock, this is almost in front of Waitrose by the mini roundabout.
Further afield in Emergreen there is aloso another ironmonger near where Budgens grocery store is.
Nothing to compare with Screwfix though. 
For electricals near the Screwfix mentioned by Mark there is als TLC aka https://tlc-direct.co.uk/

Shame to see Clas closing. I've always had the impression it was fairly busy.

Clas Ohlson was still open a couple of days ago, and still full of stock. They said they imagine they'll be closing in August, but it depends on how long their stock lasts. It's a real shame to lose that shop, it's great for all sorts of bits and pieces.

They have (or did, two days ago) a stack of convection heaters, at the back of the shop, for something like £6.50 each, reduced from around £30 originally. I bought one, since I'm in the process of buying a house that doesn't have central heating. Thought of getting a couple more, but then wondered how efficient they are. I can't really understand the information given in the manual... 
What does 'Seasonal space heating energy efficiency-η: 36.00%' imply?
Or 'Seasonal space heating energy efficiency in active mode-η: 40 %'  (I can find the outlines of the regulations online, but not any guide on interpreting the results if you aren't an electrical engineer)
I'm thinking that anyway, I should probably have convection (or fan or radiant) heaters for fast heat, and oil-filled radiators for steady background heat, to maximise efficiency. 
Any thoughts?

I am very much thinking in energy-efficient terms, so don't want to buy cheap heaters which then use stupid amounts of energy!

I purchased a microwave oven for £10 and some spanners reduced to £1. They still won't sell me the sign :(

After getting advice from an eco-heating expert, I went and bought a couple more of those cheap convection heaters! It was pointed out that all electric heaters are essentially 100% efficient at turning electricity to heat - it's how well you control the output of the heat that matters. To that end, he advised getting a thermostat adaptor plug, which reads the temperature in the room rather than the temperature inside the heater. Possibly adding to that a timer adaptor as well. 
I tried one of the heaters and it's basically silent - no doubt it will make the odd click but that's fine.

Oh, I love this guy's videos! I have watched some of his stuff on heating before. Also some very detailed stuff about dishwasher detergents :D (TLDR: you don't need to use as much of it. I now cut the tablets up and use two-thirds of one for a wash, or equivalent amount of loose powder)
