AP US History: "Complex Understanding": July 2–August 13
AP African American Studies: An Overview: July 10–August 14
AP US Government and Politics: The US Constitution: July 11–August 15
 

Eligibility: High school students (grades 9–12)

Summer 2024 History School

Looking for a way to prepare for the upcoming school year? History School is back for another fun summer of learning! This summer, we are offering three AP prep courses for high school students (grades 9–12). Each course consists of 6 one-hour-long classes held weekly via Zoom. These courses are not meant to serve as substitutes for taking the actual AP course. Even if you do not plan to take these AP courses at school, you are still welcome to register.

You must log in or create a free Gilder Lehrman K–12 Student account before registering for a History School course.

Registering for a Course

If you are 13 and older, you will be able to register on the course page. If you are under 13, please have your parents/guardians contact us at historyschool@gilderlehrman.org for information on how to register. All classes will be live on Zoom. Registered students will be added to the course’s online learning community before the first class. This will provide access to Zoom links, course recordings, and discussion boards. Students must be registered for the course to access all recordings.

Parents and educators will not be permitted to register for History School. Parents interested in participating in a GLI program should subscribe to Book Breaks or purchase a self-paced course from our History Shop. Educators are encouraged to check out our many 2024 summer professional development opportunities.

Protecting Privacy and Keeping Students Safe on Zoom

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is committed to making History School a secure experience. In order to safeguard our program, we have elected to put the following safety features into each History School class.

  • The chat feature will be monitored.
  • Cameras will automatically turn off.
  • Microphones will automatically turn off.
  • Gilder Lehrman staff will monitor each session.

Program History

The Gilder Lehrman History School is a series of live interactive courses with Gilder Lehrman master teachers. It initially launched as Pop-Up History School in May 2020 and has since offered students more than fifteen courses. The program’s goal is for students to be interested and excited about the content presented, leaving each lesson more knowledgeable about a new idea, theme, event, document, or pivotal moment.

The courses for History School Summer 2024 are intended for students in high school (grades 9–12).

Zoom

All classes will be held online using the video conferencing platform Zoom. A student must have access to a device with an internet connection. No other materials are needed for participation. We recommend downloading Zoom ahead of time to streamline your log-on experience.

We will keep the students’ cameras and microphones off. Students will be able to see and hear the teachers. 

All live sessions will be recorded and will be available on the Learning Management System within 48 to 72 hours of the live session for students who are unable to join live.

Who will be teaching?

Our History School is being led by some of the top teachers in the nation, including many who have been recognized for their excellence through our History Teacher of the Year award. You can visit individual course pages to learn more about our team of teachers.

Course Credit

Students will not receive course credit for attending History School, although teachers can choose to award extra credit for participating in these courses or assign them as part of schoolwork.

A certificate of completion will be awarded when a student attends 5 out of the 6 live classes in their course.
