UGA hosted their 8th annual Savannah Youth Ocean Conservation Summit on Saturday.

The event teaches middle school and high school students about the importance of protecting the ocean and marine life.

The summit is funded by the UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant to protect the Georgia coastline.

Diane Klement is a member of the planning committee for the event. She said the summit is unique because it brings multiple groups together to provide children with an educational experience.

"The Youth Ocean Conservation Summit has really fostered a community of students and local leaders to come together and learn from each other to create these projects, and that's not something that we have had before," Klement said.

Throughout the day, kids learned about conservation issues through speakers, art, and lab activities.

UGA representatives said by the end of the event, participants would have the tools to create their own action plan to address conservation issues in their communities.
