City leaders gathered Wednesday to announce a major investment in Southeast Nashville.

Mayor John Cooper's Office and Councilwoman Joy Styles released plans to acquire one of the largest retail spaces in the state of Tennessee and transform it into the Global Mall at the Crossings.

Metro leaders and Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) will negotiate a long-term lease of 60,000 square-feet of property, formerly known as Hickory Hollow Mall, for health care services. VUMC says it'll be similar to their space at One Hundred Oaks.

An Antioch Performing Arts Center will also be included in the development for residents in the area who may not have a way to get to the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in downtown Nashville, Styles said.

This marks the city's latest purchase in a series of recent investments in Southeast Nashville, including a new police precinct and a new city park off Tusculum Road.

"We are investing in one of our fastest-growing neighborhoods, and it will pay major dividends for our city and Southeast Nashville in particular," Mayor Cooper said. "World-class health care is just the start of what this site can do for the community."

Negotiations with Vanderbilt mark the first phase of the redevelopment. Phase two includes an "extensive" community planning process, the city says.

"I look forward to all of our next steps," Styles said. "It's going to be some more heavy lifting, but I think the lift is going to be a little bit lighter because getting to today was really the first step."
