CTE CONNECTIONS CHRONICLE "WHERE EDUCATION MEETS INDUSTRY"

Dr. Whitney Oakley, Superintendent

December 2022 • Volume 3 • Issue 4

THE CTE "WHY?"

Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares all students for high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand careers. The experience begins with career inspiration in Pre-K, awareness in elementary school, exploration in middle school, and preparation in high school. CTE equips students for post-secondary education and immediate employment opportunities to compete worldwide successfully.

Safer Together Green Housing Project

All Hands On Deck!

In December, students who are a part of the Safer Together Green Housing Project partnered with the local Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro to build houses on housing construction sites and on-site at the local Restore on West Gate City Boulevard to build housing components. The students built windows, door frames, bed frames, and more. These components are scheduled to be installed at a house on Picard Street in Greensboro, NC. The technical skills they learn during their paid apprenticeship experience ($15/hour) allowed students to gain valuable technical, soft, and practice skills gained through National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification.

Representatives from Fannie Mae joined the instructors and students on site this month to obtain firsthand reflection on the many community/industry partnerships built through the Safer Together Green Housing Project and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro. CTE will continue expanding the reach of this project and its impact on the lives of CTE students throughout the district.

School-based Enterprise at its Best!

The Break N' Bread Student Store

This month, the students at Northwest Guilford High School (NWGHS) launched and organized a Student Store Vendor event. There were 12 vendors that participated. The Break N’ Bread Student Store is a student-led school-based enterprise that is an actual business conducted on the school site as a component of a CTE Accounting course. Students created and operated an economically viable venture that generated revenue for the NWGHS CTE program. The students produced and provided goods and services to sale. Items for sale where customized blankets, water bottles, wallets, phone cases, school supplies, license tags, and beanies. The proceeds will benefit the beautification of the school's Career & Technical Education Technology Center.

Students and parents worked together to complete a color wheel challenge/task.

Last month at Weaver Academy, Career & Technical Education (CTE) parents took part in the inaugural Parent (IN)gagement Night. During this event, parents had the opportunity to have the ultimate classroom experience and participate in hands-on activities IN their student's CTE classes. Parents followed their student's bell schedule and attended 20-minute classroom sessions. Industry representatives from Machine Specialties, Inc. (MSI) and Rice Toyota were also on site to meet with parents and see firsthand the classroom to industry connection at Weaver Academy. Whether enrolling in college, becoming employed right out of high school, enlisting in the armed services, or launching their entrepreneurial venture, our GCS parents are critical to student success and choices upon graduation.

Teaching Exploring Technology & Engineering Design at Allen Middle School has been very rewarding for Mr. Do'trell Allen, CTE teacher. His 8th grade students are able to use a software called Tinkercad, which has allowed them to create real life objects from shapes focusing on food ordering. They have applied those skills with their own creativity which has incorporated different core subjects such as Math and Science into lessons that are an integral part of Exploring Technology and Engineering Design. Mr. Allen's motto is "I don't teach for my income, I teach for their outcome".

A LOOK AHEAD....JANUARY 2023
