The scientific study of teaching and learning – the basis of teacher education – has traditionally viewed core educational processes as individual and cognitive. For example, in educational psychology literatures, motivation has overwhelmingly been conceptualized either as an innate and internal drive or as mental content in the form of goals, values, expectations, and mindsets. This approach has generated a wealth of insights regarding motivation, self-regulation, and other aspects of learning.
However, without understanding the embedded quality of teaching and learning in cultural contexts, an individualistic approach can narrow understanding of the origins and nature of educational issues and can limit possibilities for intervention.
