ILPre-Doctoral Research FellowshipMurad Alam, MDNo1 yearWe would like to share with you a one-year research opportunity that may be of interest to 2nd or 3rd year medical students who are contemplating a career in dermatology. Specifically, the Division of Dermatologic Surgery, Department of Dermatology at Northwestern University has an opening for a gap year research fellow from June 2024 through May 2025. During this mentored research year, students learn to apply the methods of clinical research in order to complete several individual research projects pertaining to skin cancer and skin surgery. While the position is unpaid, gap year students are supported to attend national meetings to present their work, and are also provided appropriate training.

All gap year students completing this program during the past 10 years have been successful in matching in dermatology residency. Dr. Alam is the primary mentor for the gap year student at Northwestern Dermatologic Surgery.

This fellowship is designed to help medical students develop and master skills relevant to clinical research. Students in this fellowship are involved in all aspects of research, including developing new projects, refining methodology, collecting data, analyzing results, and preparing manuscripts for submission. Among the types of research that are done in the dermatologic surgery section are randomized controlled trials, multicenter cohort studies, database analyses, qualitative investigations, and clinical practice guidelines. The goal of the fellowship is to involve each fellow in multiple projects, while providing them with close, ongoing support and mentorship so that they can be successful investigators and end the year with a number of publishable manuscripts.

The fellowship is not funded. However, the department will provide funds for fellows to travel to meetings to present their research. Typically, gap year research fellows are second-or-third year medical students who start the fellowship one summer and end the next.

If you are interested in being considered for this fellowship, please send a CV, at least two letters of recommendation from prior clinical or research mentors who know you well, and proof of passing Step 1 (or if you haven’t taken it yet, please provide an estimated date) by 10th December. Upon receipt of this information, we will reach out to you and schedule a time to speak with you further.

Please note the gap year dermatologic surgery research fellowship is different than the CTU dermatology research fellowship found on a cursory internet search. As such the application processes are separate as well.
