Each family is expected to volunteer in some capacity with their child(ren)’s Odyssey of the Mind Team. There are plenty of roles to fit the family’s work schedule, interests and expertise. Please choose from one of the following:
Coach or co -coach: The coach will offer guidance and encouragement, and teach team members how to explore possibilities, listen to others, learn from failures, and evaluate solutions effectively. The coach will provide supervision and handle logistics such as scheduling meetings, making sure paperwork is done properly, getting the team to competition, teaching them how to solve differences, and so on. The coach will make sure the team understands the limitations of its long-term problem and oversee brainstorming and spontaneous practice sessions. The coach provides moral support. (1 coach per team)
Teach A Skill/Bring In An Expert: Team members will learn various skills such as working with wood & PVC pipe, theater concepts, building, engineering, crafts, incorporating and delivering humor, technology and more. In this role you can either teach a skill or ask someone you know to come in & teach the skill. Teaching a skill is not considered Outside Assistance as long as you present several ideas to the team, and they choose. (optional)
Tournament Judge*: Involves a one-hour online self-paced and a 3-hour training one Saturday in February plus judging all day on tournament day, and at state if the team advances. Judges will not be able to see their child’s performance. Either you can judge or be responsible for finding someone. (1 per team)
Tournament Volunteer*: Involves a 3-hour commitment on tournament day and at state if the team advances. You will receive an overview of your role prior to the tournament and on the job training the day of the tournament. Volunteers will be scheduled around their child(ren)’s performance time(s). (1 per team)
Snack Coordinator: Involves developing a schedule for each family to bring snacks for the team after school and before each practice. (optional)
