YFAM x Yale QSN x MSA Faculty Mentorship Program Enrollment
Thank you so much for your interest in serving as a faculty mentor for first-generation low-income students! We reached out to you specifically because you have indicated that you identified as first-generation and/or low-income and we believe that those shared experiences will be beneficial in the mentoring process. Your guidance will be so important for current FGLI Yalies and we are deeply grateful for you!

This form is the sign up to be a mentor for a small group of FGLI students this semester (Spring 2023). The information you provide on this form will be seen by students in order to help them choose their prospective mentors based on shared interest and background. We will be closing this form Monday, February 20th, 11:59PM EST.

YFAM (Yale FGLI Advocacy Movement), the Yale QSN (QuestBridge Scholars Network), and the Yale MSA (Muslim Students Association) will make groupings of roughly one professor per 2-3 students based on student preferences. These groups will have a chance to meet at our in-person KickOff Event (March 4th, 1-3PM at the Founder's Room in the AfAm House) with free pizza and refreshments as well as a short note from Dean Howard.

We will provide advice, structure, and discussion topics to help guide you and your mentees towards productive and insightful conversations starting from this first meeting onwards throughout the rest of the semester in low-stakes and low-commitment dialogues.

Thank you again for participating in this initiative and please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have throughout this process!

Warmly,
YFAM, Yale QSN, MSA Team

Update: We are welcoming professors who don't personally identify as FGLI to join us as a mentor as well! Your willingness and ability to mentor our students is invaluable, and we would love to have you!

Please write a couple sentences about yourself and how you identify as FGLI! You can talk about your experiences getting into college or beginning your career. (Reminder: students will be using this information to figure out which professors they might connect with best, or who might have experiences similar to their own.).

Examples:
“Though no one ever told me this when I was growing up, I was both first-generation and low income, but it was not a burden as everyone in our neighborhood was in the same boat. For my situation, education has made all the difference. Despite the family budget, my parents sent all of their children a Catholic elementary school for a better education than what could be obtained at our public school. As times changed, they even sent their four sons to a Catholic high school. Each of us worked as financial-aid students to help cover the tuition. Working at the high school was not something new to me, for I had a paper route when I was 12 and have been working ever since then.” - Dean Vince

"Dean Lafargue, the son of two immigrants, neither of whom completed high school was not only the first in his family to earn a BA, but he also went on to receive a Ph.D. here at Yale in African American and American Studies.  Were it not for a Pell-sponsored equal opportunity program, Dean Lafargue’s family would have struggled to meet the tuition and fees at his alma mater Queens College, CUNY." - Dean Lafargue
