Members of the Region 9 Board of Education

Joel Barlow High School

Dear Thomas McMorran Ed.D., Stephanie Pearson Ugol Ed.D., Gina M. Pin Ed.D., and Members of the Region 9 Board of Education

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was violently and senselessly murdered by Minneapolis police officers. In response, US-Americans nationwide took to the streets to protest police brutality and demand racial equity in all aspects of society. Now, we must reflect on how systems in our local community uphold racist ideologies. We must work together to create a community that is actively anti-racist. This is absolutely necessary and long overdue.

Today, we write to you specifically about racial injustice at Joel Barlow High School and our desire to incorporate a culturally responsive curriculum that decolonizes the education provided to students. We hope Joel Barlow High School will lead Fairfield County schools and beyond in confronting the racism and white supremacy embedded in the American education system.

As a top ranking high school in the State of Connecticut, it is unacceptable that Joel Barlow does not provide students with a comprehensive understanding of what racism is or how it is woven into every aspect of modern-day society. We acknowledge that Barlow’s current curriculum incorporates lessons about racism, but we believe it fails to thoroughly instill an understanding of systemic, structural, and institutionalized racism. It fails to provide a decolonized education. And, it fails to teach Barlow’s predominantly white student body how they benefit from white privilege and how to use that privilege to become better allies.

So, we ask, “Why?” Why isn’t there a standardized curriculum that addresses racial injustice? Why don’t students of color see themselves reflected in a diverse community of faculty and staff? Why aren’t white students forced to confront their privilege and use it to become better allies?

The ER9 School District is incredibly privileged in the resources it has available to educate students. It is time we use this privilege to properly educate students about racial injustice. It is time we use this privilege to implement a decolonized curriculum. It is time we use this privilege to teach students how to be actively anti-racist.

We must make it abundantly clear to Joel Barlow students that the Civil Rights Movement did not eradicate racism. Racism pervades society today in laws, policies, mass incarceration, gerrymandering, language, the medical field, environmental justice, voter suppression, sports, hiring practices, and the lingering effects of redlining, to name just a few.

According to 2020 enrollment data, 85% of Joel Barlow High School students identify as white. This means 85% of the student body has never been targeted by racism and therefore, cannot fully understand systemic racism or the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color unless they are formally educated about it.

Additionally, the 15% of Joel Barlow students who identify as Black, Hispanic, Asian, or mixed race deserve to learn in a space where they are represented in course content, have access to faculty and staff who look like them, and are treated with dignity and respect throughout their educational endeavors. These students must be supported, listened to, and uplifted.

Education is inherently political, and silence is a form of complicity. Barlow cannot remain silent. It must take an active stance against racial injustice.

Barlow graduates are our future. If we want them to grow into well-rounded, productive members of society, they must receive comprehensive education about systemic, structural, and institutionalized racism. We can no longer tolerate a white-washed curriculum, nor can we tolerate a school environment that allows racist behavior and language to go unaddressed.

To create an anti-racist curriculum and climate at Joel Barlow High School, students, alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and community members want to see the following action steps implemented:

  1. Require mandatory, ongoing anti-racism and intersectionality training for all Faculty and Staff (including all paras, librarians, janitorial staff, nurses, etc.).
  2. Introduce a culturally responsive curriculum that decolonizes education
  3. Commit to transparent collection and release of equity data
  4. Take a zero-tolerance stance on racism, sexism. ableism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc.
  5. Adopt a mandatory 9th grade ethnic studies course students must pass to graduate
  6. Host workshops and assemblies that allow students to elevate their critical consciousness
  7. Implementa holistic hiring approach that promotes Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion among faculty, staff, and administrators.
  8. Offer counseling services specifically tailored to support people of color
  9. Remove police presence from campus and invest in community resources.
  10. Create a Social Justice Task Force to implement and build upon the suggestions included within this proposal.

In a separate document, we outline these suggestions in greater detail and provide a list of resources and changes we would like made to the current Joel Barlow High School curriculum. We ask that you review that document to better understand our requests. We are deeply grateful for the education provided to us by Joel Barlow High School, and we hope to work together on creating a school climate and curriculum that is more inclusive and culturally responsible.

Sincerely,
