Training Description

Parent-child communication has been shown to improve sexual health outcomes for youth. Although many parents want to talk with their children with I/DD about sexuality, they don’t have the confidence and skills to do this, oftentimes, uncomfortable task.

We can support these parents by leading workshops on how to talk with their own children in a positive and effective way. This training is designed for parent trainers to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to lead parent workshops to help other parents talk about this topic with their own children. During this training, we will explore human sexual development and what topics are important to teach, when to teach the topics, and how to teach the topic. We will review a parent workshop curriculum, examine what is difficult for parents and how to overcome those barriers.

After attending this two-day workshop, participants will have the skills and the tools they need to host a two-hour workshop, including handouts, presentation slides, evaluations, tips for success, and on-going support. They will also receive a certificate of completion for passing a learning objective assessment..

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the NY State Trainer Project, Trainer’s role and commitment
  • Explore what makes a great sexuality parent trainer
  • Examine various training skills including online skills
  • Review, experience, and reflect on the overall curriculum and modules
  • Examine strategies to get buy in from parents
  • Demonstrate effective training strategies for leading parent workshops

This is a live, Zoom training - all you need is a stable internet connection and a web cam to attend.

Audience: Parents of young or grown children with I/DD. If you not a parent of a person with I/DD, please let us know about your interest. If there are extra spots in the trainings, we will reach out to you. Contact Lindsey@elevatustraining.com
