Natasha: Vaccine Supply & Scarcity

25th May 2021

Questions to consider:

1. We’ve discussed the trend that vaccine supply/scarcity affect black and brown communities differently. Is there cultural sensitivity in the political/economic/social approaches towards these differences? Would you use the words “witness” or “voyeur” to describe the approaches?

2. Is the American social media response (described in the Atlantic article, or in your own experience) culturally informed? Would you use the words “witness” or “voyeur” to describe the response?

Alex: Debate on Vaccine Passports

10th May 2021

1) Compare and contrast these two articles. Consider the intended audience, mechanisms, intended outcome, presentation of facts, and cultural sensitivity.
2) The discourse in the U.S. news surrounding vaccine passports focuses on the effects of vaccine passports on American citizens. Absent from this discourse are the global implications of vaccine passports, even though the resultant increase in travel would affect many countries that are popular vacation destinations. How would vaccine passports affect developing countries, who might have a slower vaccine rollout but rely heavily on the tourism industry for revenue?

Astha: Children’s Stories and Covid-19

10th May 2021

  1. Read the following story for children from HMEA Autism Resource Central:

How do the illustrations facilitate a child’s understanding of Covid-19? How do they vary in their communication when considering the audience is primarily for children on the autism spectrum?

2. Choose another Social Story for Children from the HMEA website: https://www.autismresourcecentral.org/social-stories-for-young-and-old-on-covid-19/

Briefly discuss the story chosen and its effectiveness in educating children on Covid-19.

Kate: So we’ve talked about art and storytelling and writing and journalism….. But what about dance?

Questions:

  1. Do you consider dancing a social necessity? (i.e. for things like weddings/proms that have dance as an aspect, but not the focus, do you think the event is lessened by not including this activity?)

  2. How do you think dance can act as a form of expression in our given pandemic situations?

To consider:

Do you notice any consistent themes in the visual depiction of Covid times?

Are there patterns (color/texture/…) in these works that can be identified as culturally informed?
