Public Writing Workshop:
From Academic Scholar to Citizen Scholar/ Journalist/Public Writer
In academia, scholarly writing is the coin of the realm. Often, however, we only reach a small audience of like-minded academic peers. Public writing is an opportunity to reach broader audiences. This workshop will focus on what it takes to make the shift from academic scholar to public writer, the benefits of doing so, and how it impacts you as a scholar in the academy. Participants will have a chance to ask questions about how to get started, print and digital publishing outlets, and the impact of public writing on your academic career. We will also consider the benefits to the Black community when Black scholars write for the public.
Dr. Irma McClaurin (http://irmamcclaurin.com/ ) is an award-winning academic and public writer. She has published 100+ columns in Insight News of Minneapolis and is their Culture and Education Editor (http://bit.ly/insightnewsposts).  In 2015, the Black Press of America named her “Best in the Nation” Columnist. She is a Ms. Magazine Author ( https://bit.ly/IrmaMsMag), a member of their Committee for Scholars, and a co-founder and presenter for their “Writing for the Popular Press” Workshops. She also writes on Medium (https://bit.ly/IrmaMedium ) and blogs regularly on her website and LinkedIn. Her book, Black Feminist Anthropology: Theory, Politics, Praxis and Poetics was selected as an “Outstanding Academic Title” in 2002. "
