Service Academy Nominations

As a Member of Congress, I have the privilege of nominating exceptional young Georgians to our nation’s service academies. The opportunity for a fully funded education and the high honor of attending a service academy make these nominations highly competitive.

Mission Statement

The mission of the U.S. service academies is to provide education and training to all cadets and midshipmen so that they graduate with the knowledge and character essential to leadership and the motivation to become career officers in the U.S. military.

Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment, you must be:

  • A citizen of the United States;
  • Unmarried with no dependents; and
  • At least 17, but less than 23 years of age by July 1 of the year you would enter (25 years old for United States Merchant Marine Academy)

Additionally, you must:

  • Demonstrate comprehensive academic preparation;
  • Demonstrate leadership in athletics and other extracurricular activities;
  • Take the SAT or the ACT;
  • Pass a comprehensive medical examination administered by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB); and
  • Pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA).

Congressional Nomination

Admission to a Service Academy is a two-tiered process. First, the candidate must apply through the Academy directly. Then, the candidate must seek a congressional nomination. Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies:

  • U.S. Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, NY
  • U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, MD
  • U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, CO
  • U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, NY

The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT., does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

Significance

Students who earn an appointment to one of these prestigious institutions receive a first-rate undergraduate education, health benefits, a stipend, and an experience that offers a world of challenging and exciting career opportunities. Additionally, the honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the active or reserve components of the military or merchant marine for a minimum of five years upon graduation.

Additional Sources

Students interested in attending the Military (USMA), Naval (USNA), and Air Force (USAFA) academies may qualify for nomination through the following additional sources:

  • The President, who nominates children of career military personnel, deceased or disabled veterans, military or civilian personnel in missing status, and Medal of Honor recipients;
  • The Vice President, who nominates five individuals from across the United States per year; and
  • The Secretary of the Army, Navy, or Air Force, who nominates members of regular military, reserve components, and participants in the ROTC.

    Key Points to Remember

    • Plan to complete admissions package as soon as possible.  Please note, that applying for admission to a U.S. service academy is a separate process from applying for a nomination from a Congressional office.  A nomination is required to be considered for an appointment. It is your responsibility to initiate a pre-candidate file at all academies to which you are seeking a nomination.
    • If you are not offered an appointment, you may be offered an opportunity to attend one of the academy prep schools. While not a guarantee of entrance in the future, the prep schools have an excellent record of getting students into the academies after the one-year prep school program.

    Deadline

    Formal candidacy may only be established upon the receipt of a completed application package for nomination, which is due to the Office by Friday, October 11, 2024. Late applications will not be accepted.

    Academy Day

    For those interested in learning more, make plans to attend Service Academy Day, an event that brings together representatives from all five service academies. This is an outstanding opportunity for students, parents, and guidance counselors to speak with representatives from the U.S. Military, Naval, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and Air Force academies, as well as members of the Congressional office, about best practices for applying to these prestigious institutions.
