Job Description

SDBWC Purpose: The SDBWC purpose is to build a more equitable economy for all Black workers in San Diego County and to advance the Black Worker Justice Movement! The SDBWC will organize people power, improve job quality through policy advocacy and fight for workers’ rights.

Position Summary: The San Diego Black Worker Center’s (SDBWC) Organizer is responsible for executing the organization’s strategic plan by implementing outreach programs to build and retain membership. This position requires the incumbent to be good at collaboration, show initiative, and take responsibility for helping to establish the foundational practices of the SDBWC.

Key Responsibilities:

This position serves as the organizing support for all outreach and implementation of tactics and curriculums for the SDBWC’s programs and campaigns. They are responsible for coordinating volunteers, mobilizing community members, and effectively communicating to the organization's member base. The SDBWC Organizer supports the SDBWC across the following areas:

Organizing & Community Outreach

  • Execute field strategy for member outreach and retention dedicated to building power for and with Black workers.

  • Identify member activists who will participate in focus groups, storytelling and civic engagement strategies.

  • Identify pressing organizing issues, organize direct actions, events, and other tactics to address said issues around Black worker justice.

  • Implement campaign organizing tactics, strategies, goals, and objectives.

  • Assist with the monitoring of campaign outcomes and deliverables.

  • Organize volunteer turn-out and assist with activities and event logistics.

Communications

  • Participate in local and regional coalitions, partnerships, and networks; share responsibility for increasing the visibility and reach of the SDBWC.

  • Maintain a membership database, including data entry, observing and analyzing member trends, and engaging with member feedback.

  • Assist in the writing of promotional materials and member communications.

  • Mobilize community members to actions and events through phone banking, texting, social media, etc.

  • Assist SDBWC team in implementing social media and digital communication campaigns, including responding to direct inquiries.

  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate must demonstrate a commitment to empowering Black communities, advancing racial and economic justice, and addressing the needs and concerns of Black workers.

  • 1-3 years’ experience in an organization or program coordinating role, assisting with the implementation of multiple projects in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment.

  • Mastery of English language in both written and verbal formats, including ability to revise and edit culturally appropriate communications materials.

  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail, including complex scheduling and time management.

  • Exceptional organizational skills with a proven record of accomplishment of managing competing priorities and conflicting deadlines.

  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office and Google applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel; Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.

  • Excellent leadership skills and the ability to motivate others across teams and departments.

  • Self-motivated, with strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

  • Valid CA driver’s license and access to insured car for work related travel.

Autonomy:

  • The SDBWC Organizer is expected to be able to work independently, with a moderate level of direct supervision.

  • The SDBWC Organizer is expected to use sound judgement, in alignment with the SDBWC's mission and values in the performance of their duties.

  • The SDBWC Organizer may be empowered to make decisions that directly impact their work and shall not make independent and autonomous decisions that impact the SDBWC as a whole, its staff, other SDBWC departments and teams, or those of SDBWC’s Incubation partner.

Supervisorial Responsibilities:

  • The SDBWC Organizer may occasionally supervise community volunteers.

  • The SDBWC Organizer does not have routine and/or regular supervision responsibilities for other full-time staff.

This position may be supervised by: SDBWC’s Director. *In the absence of SDBWC’s staff, CPI’s Executive Director.

Salary Range: Initial salary range for this position is between $65,685 and $75,000 per year.

Fiscal Sponsorship and Management Disclosure:

The San Diego Black Worker Center has entered into fiscal sponsorship and management agreements with the Center on Policy Initiatives. The scope of these agreements includes the management of SDBWC’s financial and personnel responsibilities. While this position is under the direct supervision of SDBWC’s authorized representatives and/or other staff, the employment relationship (including payroll, taxes, and benefits) is directly with the Center on Policy Initiatives.
