My Review of Sandcastle Inn

Irene Hannon is such a versatile author. She can write mystery/suspense as well as sweet romance/women’s fiction and each type of book is so believable and leaves the reader satisfied, as though just having eaten a gourmet meal.

This was a wonderful story about Matt and Vienna, as well as a few other characters we enjoyed getting to know and other characters that we continue to enjoy from previous books in this series. I love long series and this is one of those. I feel invested in the community, as though I’m part of it. This was a great book and definitely one I’ll be talking about with my friends and encouraging my mother especially to read.

True crime did NOT just become popular in this century! Scour the old newspapers for a full and detailed telling of the latest crime. That’s how I got the idea for Night Falls on Predicament Avenue! Yes! I read an old newspaper article from the late 1800’s in which they described in quite delectable detail, the crime scene of a murder in a house with questionable history. That being said, it’s also important to note, that forensics DID just recently become popular in the last 50-100 years. In the 1800’s, if you were murdered, it was common for your neighbor to tour and trample over your crime scene out of curiosity and/or the hope they might be of service in solving the crime. More likely than not, they were merely wanna-be podcast listeners of true crime shows simply born too early for that technological advancement.

My Review of Night Falls on Predicament Avenue:

This is not the first book of Jaime Jo Wright and it will not be the last. She is an amazing writer who draws readers into the story, holds us there and leaves us more than satisfied when the last page is read. I am not a great detective and usually cannot figure out ‘who done it’ and this book was no exception. Even as I was reading and she was disclosing the villains, I was not able to connect all the dots simply because she is such a great storyteller.

I really love the dual-time period stories and Ms. Wright does a great job with these type of stories. I was as fully invested in Effie as I was in Norah. This book was a great mix of romance, suspense, mystery, and psychological thriller with an undertone of biblical truth.

We’re in a new month, which means we’re talking about a new biblical event. Last month we talked about some of the biblical figures in Genesis: Adam & Eve, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, and Isaac and Rebekah.

I’ve long been a fan of 60s music—since the 1960s! Neil Diamond has been a favorite performer since that time. I must have been in fourth grade with “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime” was released. I had no idea of any deeper meaning, just loved the song—it would’ve gotten full 98 score from me for having “a great beat and fun to dance to” if I’d been a judge on American Bandstand with Dick Clark.

Fast-forward a good fifty plus years, and I’m researching 60s music where the song title has a girl’s name in it for my Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe and Venue series and I run across “Cracklin’ Rosie.” That was one song I sang with gusto. So fun. But I never was sure of the meaning. What or who was Cracklin’ Rosie? Then I got an inspiration that made me laugh out loud. I even contacted friends to share—tickled me to no end. What if Rosie was a chiropractor? That was the genesis for this story.

Of course, it needed to be funny. And who better to add humor and conflict than a medical doctor who fancied himself as an amateur comedian? The idea stuck and the brainstorming began. I have to tell you my critique partner, Diana Brandmeyer, understands humor. It was a blast coming up with ways to make it funny.

I hope you will agree, and that there will be moments when you snort or chuckle. Or even laugh out loud and have someone look over at you, so you tell them, “You gotta read this book.” Anyway, whether anyone watches you read, I hope you’ll enjoy this latest addition to the Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe and Venue series, Cracklin’ Rosie.

My Review of Cracklin’ Rosie

I have been thoroughly enjoying The Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe series. Maybe it’s because it’s set in the 1970s (an era when I was born) and reading all the quirks from that time brings back great memories, or maybe it’s because of the great characters that the author brings to life along with the entertaining storylines that go with them, or maybe it’s just because she weaves hope and entertainment seamlessly together. Whatever the reason, I love this series and hope there are more books to come.

Review of Just for the Summer

I don’t usually read too many light romantic reads, but the back cover blurb intrigued me and I thought reading one about the summer would be fun. I was right! I was pulled into the storyline from the very first page. I related to both Ginny and Jacqueline from the beginning and couldn’t wait to find out how it worked out for them both. I loved the author’s imagination, her whimsical style and how she fleshed out the characters making me as a reader satisfied with the journey and the conclusion. Great story. I can’t wait to read more from her!

This year on the Cheer Up Podcast, we’ve been talking about biblical figures – both their roles in history as well as what we can learn from them to apply to our lives today.

In February 2024, we talked about the following couples (love versus lust):
• David and Bathsheba
• Mary and Joseph
• Samson and Delilah
• Ruth and Boaz

In March, we started going through the Old Testament and discussed Adam and Eve and Noah, and today we’re going to delve into the story of Abraham and Sarah (or Abram and Sarai as were their names before God changed them).

Abraham and Sarah’s story begins in Genesis 12 and goes through Genesis 25. One of the things I love about God is how He takes imperfect people and uses them to help fulfill His purpose. The couple faced many challenges throughout their lives, but instead of me telling you about that now, I’ll let you listen to the podcast and find out what we discussed.

Spiritual growth is one takeaway we can learn from Abraham and Sarah’s story, and in order to grow spiritually, we need patience, preparation and endurance. God sometimes does that in us by refining our character through the different trials we must walk through.

Call to Embrace is inspired by a true story of a young mom that I met over 13 years ago as I walked alongside her during a difficult time of her life. A year and a half ago I stood in the Pacific Ocean dip netting for salmon near the mouth of the Kenai River. As the waters tugged at my waders, I remembered the church set on the hill behind me where a cross is always lit as a beacon and I thought there is a story here. With anticipation, I prayed what God wanted me to share. What unfolded is the plot line of my friendship with that young mom set in the stunning geographical area of South-Central Alaska.

My Review of Call to Embrace:

This was the first book by this author that I have read. I loved how the author told us before we began that it was based on a true story. I love how the action started immediately and we found out more about Emily as the story progressed. I loved Rose, Destiny, and Ada. What a beautiful family God provided for Emily during this pivotal time in her life. I had a few guesses of what would happen throughout the book, and while I was wrong, I wasn’t disappointed. The way it ended was even better than I could have expected. I grew to love Eric as well. Definitely a book I’m glad I read, and would love to read more by this author.

About the Author

Review of The Ark and the Dove

I would think biblical fiction would be one of the hardest genres to write, with wanting to stay accurate to the Bible and then filling in what could have happened when the Bible simply does not tell us. This was definitely a book that made me think about the time of Noah, why God chose to destroy the earth while saving one man and his family and the different familial relationships that would have intersected, especially while trapped on the ark for days on end, with plenty to do but no where to escape. I am so glad I read this book and thought, really though, about what life would have been like back then.
