About

OUR COALITION

Defuse Nuclear War is a coalition of more than 200 organizations and organizers dedicated to reducing the risk of nuclear war.

Since June 2022, the coalition has organized more than 150 in-person actions across the United States  and numerous online events with hundreds of attendees. Our coalition emphasizes diplomacy, disarmament, and the reinstatement of key treaties.

October 16, 2022, Defuse Nuclear War marked 60 years since the start of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Thank you to all of the activists and organizations who made nationwide pickets and demonstrations on Oct. 14 and Oct 16 a reality. In the end, more than 50 Defuse Nuclear War actions were successfully organized!

On February 24, 2023, Defuse Nuclear War held events all over the United States demanding diplomacy in place of military escalation in Ukraine.

Check out coverage of our events: ABC and NBC affiliates in Madison, Wisconsin; ABC and NBC affiliates and The Missourian in Columbia, Missouri; and Boston 25 in Boston, Massachusetts.

During the week of April 24-30, 2023, the coalition celebrated Daniel Ellsberg Week.

The efforts to mark Daniel Ellsberg Week generated city proclamations, articles, op-eds, videos, and a puncture or two in the bubble of media groupthink that passes for journalism. Seeking “to honor peacemaking and whistleblowing,” the cities of Albuquerque, NM, and San Francisco and Berkeley, CA, issued proclamations designating April 24-30 as Daniel Ellsberg Week to honor the renowned Pentagon Papers whistleblower. Additionally, The Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence presented Ellsberg with their annual award.

Coalition efforts resulted in dozens of events nationwide during the Defuse Nuclear War Week of Action September 24-30, 2023

the Defuse Nuclear War Coalition organized dozens of nationwide protests, vigils, and demonstrations — for diplomacy with Russia and Ukraine; disarming ICBMs; and reinstating ABM, INF and Open Skies treaties. Our week of action was covered in Common Dreams and local media across the country.

During the week of January 8-14, 2024, the Defuse Nuclear War coalition organized for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Groups rallied, vigiled, dropped banners, held signs at busy intersections, and passed out flyers to educate communities on the connections between the crisis in Gaza and nuclear weapons.
