LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain High School esports team capped off an undefeated season by becoming the first school to win a sanctioned Esports State Championship in Mario Kart Friday afternoon. The top-seeded RMHS Lobos Varsity team defeated No. 3 Pueblo West Mario Kart Varsity, 3-0, at Localhost.
“Pueblo West gave us a big test in the finals, so hats off to them,” said Chance Mazzia, the RMHS esports coach. “We didn’t lose a single set all season, so it was good to see our kids push through a challenge like that.”
The Lobos entered the day as the top seed in both state championship brackets, for Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart, and they ended the day with both titles. James Baird, Drake Jones, Jack Ham and Cooper White claimed the Mario Kart title for Rocky Mountain.
“This is an awesome group of kids and they really drove the whole thing,” Mazzia said. “They’ve worked hard all season; they love playing together and we have so much fun together. It was great to see them cap of another undefeated season with a state championship.”
Rocky Mountain defeated No. 9 Mario Kart Team A from Vista Peak High School in the quarterfinal round and then knocked off the No. 5 ThunderHawks from Ellicott Senior High School. In the Grand Final, they swept Pueblo West, 3-0 by scores of 136-98, 127-107 and 134-100.
