VeChainThor is the world’s leading enterprise-grade public blockchain platform. Launched by the VeChain Foundation in 2015, VeChain currently has operations in Europe, Asia and America.

VeChain’s mission is to lower the barrier of using blockchain technology and allow projects and enterprises to leverage blockchain technology to create value and solve real world problems.

Since its launch, VeChain has managed to work together with an impressive list of enterprises that are now building on the VeChainThor blockchain, suchs as Walmart, BMW, LVMH, DNV, PwC and Deloitte.

The VeChainThor blockchain has some unique features solving many of the issues other blockchains are currently facing:

  • Two-token model: VET is the native coin of the VeChainThor blockchain used as a smart-payment currency. Every VET generates VTHO every block. VTHO is used to pay for blockchain transactions. This allows for blockchain transactions to remain low and predictable, even when the price of VET and VTHO increase.
  • Proof-Of-Authority (POA) consensus mechanism: 101 Nodes secure the blockchain, they all have their identity as well as at least 25 million VET at stake. POA allows for high throughput, while keeping energy consumption to a minimum, making VeChainThor one of the most environmentally friendly blockchains currently available.
  • EVM compatible: At its core, the VeChainThor blockchain uses the Ethereum Virtual Machine to process transactions.
  • Unique features: Multi-clause transactions allow one transaction to perform multiple blockchain operations in one go. Designated Gas Payer allows other parties to pay for blockchain transactions, resulting in dApps where the end-user does not need any crypto at all.

VeChain’s success of onboarding enterprises has not gone unnoticed and more and more projects are now looking to build their dApps on the VeChainThor blockchain.

This hackathon is focused on supporting those projects, by developing robust tooling and additional functionality for the VeChainThor blockchain and it’s developer communities, helping deliver foundational resources to create the optimal building environment.

Requirements

What to Build

Entrants must develop new frameworks and tooling that will benefit future builders wanting to build dApps on the VeChainThor blockchain. Examples include:

  • Tools to start (local) blockchain instances
  • Utilities to write, compile, debug and test smart contracts
  • Utilities to deploy smart contracts
  • Development frameworks for python, javascript and/or typescript
  • Front-end libraries that help developers build user-facing applications that connect with the VeChainThor blockchain
  • Integrations with decentralized storage options like IPFS
  • Ports of common ETH tools such as Truffle, Hard Hat etc

Bonus:

Entrants may also build a dApp, wallet, DeFi protocol, ‘green’ application or any other secondary project that showcases the benefits of the Entrant’s Primary Project (each a “Bonus Project”) to be eligible for a Bonus Prize. The Bonus Project must be submitted separately from the Primary Project.

Python SDK ABI v2 Project:

If an Entrant’s Primary Project also meets the below requirements they will be eligible for the Python SDK ABI v2 Prize.

  • Update the thor-devkit.py to support ABI v2 functionality
  • Write a brief documentation on design decisions and how to use the updated library
  • Write tests to cover functionality introduced by the Project
  • Make pull request via GitHub on the original thor-devkit.py

What to Submit

  • Provide a URL to your project code repository or NFT listing. Any code repository submitted must be public and open-source.
  • Include a video (about 3 minutes) that demonstrates your submission. Videos must be uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, or Facebook Video and made public.
  • Bonus: Submit a separate Bonus Project that uses your Primary Project to be eligible for a Bonus Prize.
