Course Description

Within this course, you will learn how to paint with gouache; an opaque watercolor. By use of various papers, brush applications, color schemes, and techniques; you will learn how to incorporate the medium into your portfolio. We will view notable artworks in gouache, while also creating studies and final pieces. You will learn about linear placement, capturing light, and everything you need to develop a gouache painting.  All levels are welcome beginning to advance.

Course Outline

Week 1: By use of practice techniques and copying a flower painting by artist Stanley Bielen, we will begin by focusing on mastering the creamy consistency of gouache, incorporating value, color, and capturing late.

Homework 1: Print out two copies of Bielen Floral Paintings of your choice. One in color and one in black and white. You will make studies from them; a color study and a value study. Start with a simple linear placement focusing on color, temperature (warm and cool) value (light to dark).

Week 2: We will be painting an in-class still-life, focusing on linear placement, light, scale, color, and object relationship.

Homework 2: Create your own still-life of no more than 3 objects. By use of natural or artificial light, create two paintings; 1 in color and 1 in monochrome.

Week 3: We will now focus on portraiture art. By use of a mirror brought to class by you, we will be painting our portraits from life; focusing on linear placement, skin tone, light, and shadows.

Homework 3: Create another life self-portrait of yourself. Choose a different angle from what you painted in class.

Week 4: We will continue with portraiture. Bring in an image of a friend, family member, or someone you know that has a different skin tone than your own. We will paint these portraits, challenging ourselves with learning to paint a variety of skin tones.
