Assessment and Management of COPD exacerbations in the ED:
What you don’t know could be hurting your patients

After completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- More effectively manage COPD exacerbations when patients present to the ED
- Evaluate patients presenting to the ED using:
- Screening tools to identify and diagnose COPD in patients with risk factors
- Risk stratification tools to identify patients with COPD at risk for serious outcomes
- Recognize the impact of comorbidities on the management and discharge planning of the COPD patient, for example: coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease
- Develop safe discharge plans that will also reduce the risk of returning to the ED.
David Braganza MD CCFP(EM)
David is an emergency physician who works in rural communities in multiple provinces including Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick. He has a special interest in working in Francophone communities outside Quebec, especially the Acadian communities of Northern New Brunswick. David completed his training in family medicine at McGill University and his EM training at the Université de Sherbrooke.
Mitchell Shulman MD FRCPC CSPQ
Dr. Mitch Shulman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at McGill and an attending physician in the emergencies of
the 2 campuses of the McGill University Health System. After completing his undergraduate training at Harvard, he returned to Montreal to attend McGill Medical School and then do a residency in Emergency Medicine (where he was Chief Resident). He was among the first Royal College certified Emergency Medicine specialists (1983) and served as an examiner for the Royal College. He was acting Director of the Emergency Department and served as its Research Director. He’s been a community doc and an occupational health physician. Currently, as well as his emergency department clinical responsibilities, he also serves as a medical scientist on an ethics review committee and works at the McGill Student Health Center. He was the Medical Director responsible for First Response in his community for over 20 years. His philosophy on teaching has always been that we all have valuable knowledge to share and so he sincerely looks forward to hearing from you as we share the learning at this webinar.
Sacha Bhinder MD FRCPC
Dr. Sacha Bhinder is an adult respirologist in the Scarborough area, practicing at the Scarborough Health Network Centenary site, the Toronto Lung Care Clinic, and the Heart Health Institute. After having completed his MD degree at the University of Toronto, he went on to pursue training in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Adult Respirology, both at the University of Toronto. He is a lecturer in the Division of Respirology at the University of Toronto. For the Scarborough Health Network he has served in a number of leadership positions including Co-Chair of the Corporate Medical Education Committee; hospital representative to the Toronto Academic Health Science Network Education Committee, and recently as Corporate Chief and Medical Director for the Department of Medicine.
