What started as a TikTok challenge is causing injuries, fear, and getting some teens in trouble.

The "Orbeez Challenge" is named after those same little gel-like pellets seen in many products marketed for kids, but the challenge is launching them at people - using a gel-ball blaster gun.

"So there have been reports throughout the country of teens doing this challenge," said St. Joseph County Police Corporal Aris Lee "going down shooting people whether they're walking down the sidewalk or shooting at people in their cars and getting hit with that and they have been arrested and charged with that as well."

Some charged with battery or assault, and Airsoft owners say this is not what the guns were made to do.

"With paintball airsoft and now with the new gel blasters you would actually go out to a playing field and play different games," said Nick Mullen Total Control Paintball & Airsoft owner.

Gear like like long sleeves, pants, masks, and goggles protect peoples skin and eyes, and when not in use people can become seriously injured if hit with a gel pellet.

"Our two big sayings is safety and have fun at our field," Mullen says "I hate over the years people have kind of done these different challenges with paint ball guns, airsoft guns, and now the gel balls."

Mullen says challenges like this put his business at risk because causing dangerous situations have serious consequences.

"If you hit someone in the skin it can cause them to bleed or leave a mark, and hitting someone in the eye that's the biggest danger obviously," says Mullen "besides the fact if you shoot at someone and they think they're getting shot at they might return fire with a real gun as well."

Police are now asking parents to monitor your children if they do have this gun.

As well as to monitor the types of challenges your kids may be exposed to on TikTok.
