WASHINGTON — A Democratic House lawmaker with oversight authority is calling for an investigation into the largest for-profit hospital chain in the country, HCA Healthcare.

Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), the chair of the House Ways and Means Committee’s subcommittee on oversight, this week asked the Department of Health and Human Services to investigate whether HCA is improperly admitting emergency department patients to the hospital when they don’t need inpatient care.
