Lead. Learn. Inspire. With Roger Quarles - S03E13

Lead. Learn. Inspire. With Roger Quarles - S03E13

Roger is a teacher and student when it comes to life.

Having served as an Idaho teacher, principal, superintendent, and ultimately chief deputy state superintendent, Roger has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing rural education, and appreciates the fierce independence of Idaho and Idahoans alike. Prior to joining the Foundation as Executive Director in 2013, Roger was co-director of the Idaho Leads project at Boise State University’s Center for School Improvement and Policy Studies, and served as an Assistant Professor in the Executive Educational Leadership Program. Roger remains active in the business community through his service on a variety of boards, including Chairman of the Teach For America Regional Board.

As Executive director of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation, Roger has also assisted with Mission43. The title of this episode is the tagline for Mission43. Mission43 provides post-9/11 servicemen, women, and military spouses opportunities to succeed in Idaho after the military through the pillars of education, employment and engagement. Mission43 is fully funded and led through the generosity of this private family foundation.

The Albertson Family Foundation’s philanthropic history started in 1966 when Joe Albertson, the founder of the Albertsons grocery stores, began to give back to Idaho communities. This was mainly done through educational opportunities for Idahoans because he and his wife, Kathryn, were not able to finish college during the Great Depression. Since then, the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation has given over $700 million throughout the state to make it a better place to live, work, and play.

Roger is an avid outdoorsman and tennis player. He loves Idaho and cares about our community! Listen to the podcast, enjoy and share with your friends!

The Mark Johnson Episode - S03E12

The Mark Johnson Episode - S03E12

On Tuesday night @KTVB tweeted out a link to Mark Johnson's bio (complete with professional photo), and his name.

And nothing else.

Little did they know it was the greatest podcast promotion they have ever made!

Mark Johnson has been an anchor at KTVB in Boise, Idaho since 1983. Our community is grateful for him and all he has done over the years and continues to do each day!

Mark’s bio includes gems like, “National Edward R. Murrow and Emmy award winner Mark Johnson returned to Idaho’s NewsChannel 7 in April of 1996… and who could blame him?!”

Mark married the former Chris Plishka (from Baraboo, Wisconsin) in 1992. They are avid Green Bay Packers fans and have passed the allegiance down to Mark's twins Hannah and Lindsey and now onto their teenage twin daughters Alexa & Grace.

When he's not hanging out with one of his many twin daughters, his hobbies include GOLF!, skiing, music and golf (did we mention that?).

He is also very involved with the community and has volunteered for a number of organizations including The Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers - Big Sisters, United Cerebral Palsy, United Way, Salvation Army, First Tee of Idaho, Make-A-Wish and the Boise Rescue Mission.

Mark's goals are to someday be as good at putting as his wife, to figure out how to not burn a t-bone, and to astro turf his lawn putting an end to mowing!

We hope you enjoy this episode with Mark and hope you enjoy him every night in your bedroom! (You have to listen to understand that one 😉)

How to Prevent/End Homelessness & Eviction in Idaho with Ali Rabe - S03E11

How to Prevent/End Homelessness & Eviction in Idaho with Ali Rabe - S03E11

Our neighbors need our help.

It costs $1,000 on average for Jesse Tree to keep a family housed, compared to $5-10,000 for a family to find new housing after being evicted.

At Jesse Tree, they provide information and support to 500 households per month via their Housing Crisis Line, and case management and rental assistance to 50-100 households per month. Over 90% of people requesting assistance can’t pay their rent due to an unanticipated expense or shortfall such as a health care bill, unexpected job loss, or car breakdown.

In 2020, 3,500 people became homeless for the first time in their lives and 824 evictions were filed in Ada and Canyon County.

These numbers continue to increase year-to-year.

Jesse Tree operates a Housing Crisis Line, providing support, information, and referrals to community resources to our neighbors who are unable to pay their rent. They also offer landlord-tenant mediation services so people can resolve their crises and avoid eviction. Jesse Tree provides Emergency Rental Assistance coupled with case management to households at highest risk of eviction and homelessness. Case management sets people up for success and includes landlord mediation, budgeting help, and housing stability planning. Jesse Tree also supports households through the Eviction Court process to keep them from getting an eviction on their record, and to keep them out of homelessness.

Ali Rabe is the Executive Director of Jesse Tree and an Idaho State Senator for D17.

Prior to joining Jesse Tree, Ali was a Staff Attorney at HomeBase, headquartered in San Francisco, where she supported local governments and service providers in their efforts to prevent and end homelessness.

In 2012, Ali received the Boren Fellowship, through which she supported indigenous communities in rural Cambodia fighting to keep their land. She continued the same work in Sierra Leone. Ali also spent some years working for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services as an adjudicator, processing refugees from all over the world.

Ali is a proud alumnus of The College of Idaho and holds a J.D. from William & Mary Law School. In her spare time, she teaches yoga and enjoys the outdoors. You might find her around town on her yellow bicycle or exploring nearby hiking trails with friends, family, and her dog.

It is routinely recognized as an emerging health system of note as the transformation of health care in America continues.

On July 1, 2019, Dr. Marlene Tromp became the seventh President of Boise State University and, in honor of her inauguration, developed an endowment for the Presidential True Blue Scholarship to assist more Idaho residents with the opportunity to attend college. Behavioral and Emotional Health Management During a Crisis with Jason Coombs //S2E26

"We can get through this."  With everything going on in the world including the COVID virus, natural disasters and so much more - Jason Coombs walks us through how we can manage behavioral and emotional health during a crisis.

Jason describes his journey in his own words here, "I have effectively guided thousands of addicted individuals and their families out of the chaos and into recovery. I am a person in long-term recovery myself and so I've been there. I now lead a nationally accredited substance abuse treatment center, Brick House Recovery. I'm a professional TEDx speaker, consultant, and leadership expert."

Brick House Recovery was established in 2014 when our founder noticed an aching need in the Treasure Valley community: high-quality, private, faith-based addiction recovery. Since that time, our goal has been to provide exceptional and effective treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

Treating COVID-19 On The Front Lines With Dr. Torres In Blaine County //S2E22

Treating COVID-19 On The Front Lines With Dr. Torres In Blaine County //S2E22

With more than 80 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Blaine County, Idaho - it now has more cases of COVID-19 per capita than anywhere in the U.S.A.. At least fourteen of the cases involve health care workers and at least two people have died from COVID-19. Some of the West's first known COVID-19 cases came from ski resorts that draw visitors from around the world.
While resort towns like this can typically house a lot of tourists, St. Luke's only has 25 hospital beds. The hospital has had dozens of COVID-related admissions and ultimately shut down except for the emergency department.
Dr. Jim Torres Is on the front lines as an ER doctor in Blaine County. Jim graduated from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University in 1985. Dr. Torres II works in Ketchum, ID and 2 other locations and specializes in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Torres II is affiliated with St Luke's Boise Medical Center, St Luke's Meridian Medical Center and St Luke's Wood River Medical Center.

The Real Saratov Approach Missionary - Andrew Propst //S2E17

The Real Saratov Approach Missionary - Andrew Propst //S2E17

This story will shock you.

Just over 20 years ago, Andrew Propst and Travis Tuttle were kidnapped, held for ransom for five days and let go while serving missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Saratov, Russia. Propst and Tuttle’s story goes far beyond a miraculous ransom survival story, which is why Garrett Batty contacted them to make a movie, “The Saratov Approach,” out of their shared experience.  As the Associate Producer of the Saratov Approach, Andy Propst helped fund, write, promote, and deliver a national theatrical release of a full-length motion picture that won multiple awards and returned an IRR to its investors of more than 1000%.

Andy Propst is now the CEO of HomeRiver Group, a Meridian company that has acquired a half-dozen property management companies around the nation in the last two years and now manages nearly 5,000 rentals in 20 states. Andy has over 15 years of experience both in residential and commercial real estate management. Past President and Owner of Park Place Property Management, a Certified Residential Management Company (CRMC®), in Boise, Idaho. Andrew has illustrated throughout his career his resolute commitment to delivering first-class results for clients, as well as consistently improving efficiencies and operations across his companies. Industry knowledge and a keen focus on technology has been a major priority for Andy. He has obtained three of the leading industry designations: Certified Property Manager® (CPM®) from the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM®), Master Property Manager ® (MPM®) and Residential Management Professional ® (RMP®), both from the National Association of Residential Property Managers ® NARPM®.

Volunteerism has been a major focus and joy for Andy, from service on the National Board of Directors of NARPM® for six years as a Regional Vice President, to National Treasurer, National President-Elect, and then his election as President of The National Association of Residential Property Managers (NARPM®) in 2015.

Living Unfrozen with Nathan Ogden //S2E15

Living Unfrozen with Nathan Ogden //S2E15

Nathan Ogden knew his life to be near perfect with two young children, a wonderful wife of four years, and a successful career. Then at 26 years old, life presented a drastic challenge three days before Christmas in 2001. Searching for adventure on a snow-capped mountain would soon have Nathan trading in his skis for a wheelchair. Coming off a ski jump wrong he was instantly paralyzed and diagnosed as a quadriplegic, not able to swallow or even breathe on his own. There was too much to live for so he battled through setbacks and obstacles with intense therapy. Nathan returned to work full time, was able to drive again, and embraced his new life from a seated position with the motto of “We Believe”. He was getting much stronger and knew he would walk again.

Through intense therapy and pain over the next year he recovered nearly half of his body function and began working full-time again. Just as life seemed “normal” again Nathan experienced another devastating neck break that robbed him the use of his hands, triceps, and any regained movement from the chest down. By staring his excuses in the eye he found new legs to live life standing taller.

Today, he is a highly sought after inspirational keynote speaker, trainer and author of the book, Unfrozen. Nathan has taught thousands in business, organizations, nonprofits and schools how to conquer their fears and move from paralysis to progress through eliminating excuses in their professional and personal lives. Nathan instantly connects with his audience and delivers invaluable principles they can relate to and act upon.

Since his second neck break he has experienced snow skiing, snorkeling, skydiving, completing a half triathlon and most recently rappelling off a 150 foot cliff. Nathan resides in Boise, Idaho with his wife, Heather, and together they enjoy raising their four children. His courage and determination give hope and power to all who know and hear his message.

Surviving a Plane Crash with Nate Calvin // S2E13

Surviving a Plane Crash with Nate Calvin // S2E13

This is not a regular Inspire Excellence podcast episode.

This episode goes deeply into the specifics of the event of a plane crash that involved only one survivor, Nate Calvin. Nate was in a private plane, when travesty struck. "...the wingtip struck a tree. The plane spun around, hit a stand of pine trees and broke in half." The L-IV's fuselage impacted inverted, about 50 feet east of the runway with the tail, separated, about 30 feet behind it. Both wings were sheared off and a wingtip was found "lodged about 6 feet high in a pine trunk." This is the first time ever that this story has been shared publicly and in this amount of detail.

Nate walks us through the series of events that happened before, during and after this tragic event. His story will have you listening to every word as he helps us visualize what it's really like to be in a plane crash. As a pilot himself, his understanding and breakdown of this event gives a unique perspective on this compelling story.

Nate Calvin is the CEO/President of Aero LEDs.  AeroLEDs was formed in 2005 with the intent to redefine aviation lighting as it existed for the last 50 years. With great attention to engineering function balanced with due consideration to product form, they have redefined the expectations of what and how aircraft lighting will be judged.

**This podcast episode was recorded and had the publish date set before the helicopter crash involving Kobe Bryant and others. We pray for their families and hope all of us hug those around us just a little bit tighter. God bless.

Rapid Rope on Shark Tank // S2E12

Rapid Rope on Shark Tank // S2E12

Chris and Geanie Rodgers started Rapid Rope with an idea and a dream 8 years ago, now they are watching their dream come to life after recently landing a deal on ABC's Shark Tank. This Idaho based family business is a great example of what working hard and doing good looks like.

Rapid Rope is designed for everyone and for almost every task, from tying your Christmas tree on your car to tying down a trailer of goods. Their product is designed to give you the most efficient way to store and use rope. Chris developed the idea after working as an electrical lineman in Idaho for over 20 years. He uses rope a lot in his day-to-day tasks. On Sunday,” Chris and Geanie showed the sharks how to survive a zombie apocalypse and tugged at the sharks hearts in the process. With lifetime sales of $172,000, and personal investment of $115,000 their own savings, Chris and Geanie, asked for $200,000 for 20% of their company.

Chris had planned to quit his job, but the family needed the continued support. They are parents to five children, including a 12-year-old boy adopted from Ethiopia who was sick with colitis. Geanie quit her job as a nurse to take care of him. The couple built a school in their son’s name and did a fund run to raise money to help children in Africa. As Chris and Geanie went on to experience "the most nerve wracking, and most surreal moment of our lives" in the Shark Tank, Barbara Corcoran went on to give them the $200,000, for 30%of their company.

"Our goal was to be ourselves, make our family proud and stick to our core values and beliefs and let it all fall into place. Our main drive at making our company successful is to be able to give back. We believe that if we live our passion and make our community, state, country and world a better place than we have done our part."

Chris and Geanie Rodgers of Rapid Rope landed a deal in the Shark Tank - why can't it happen to you? All you small business owners and entrepreneurs, be encouraged by this! Keep after it.

Local Scouts Earn All 137 Merit Badges //S2E10

Local Scouts Earn All 137 Merit Badges //S2E10

Tyler and Blake Nelson have accomplished something only a select few have done, they've earned all 137 merit badges offered by the Boy Scouts of America. These 15 year old, twin brothers joined the rare and exclusive club of being one of the few Boy Scouts to collect every merit badge, which includes everything from bugling to geology. These Treasure Valley kids have set an example for all of us for setting and achieving personal goals.

As we kick off the first week of 2020, hearing this example of goal achieving can help us better understand the payoff of persevering. "It's really cool because we're gonna hopefully look back 20 years from now and remember the things that we've learned and the experiences we've had and memories that we can pass down to our kids and hopefully inspire them," Blake said.

This interview is full of motivation, impactful stories, and valuable lessons learned while going after goals. Listen and then share with us your thoughts on social media! @bvadev

The Ultimate Christmas Episode with Mayor Nancolas //S2E8

The Ultimate Christmas Episode with Mayor Nancolas //S2E8

Merry Christmas!!

We hope you are enjoying this time of year with your families and loved ones.

This is our Ultimate Christmas Episode!!! We have Mayor Nancolas on our show from the City of Caldwell and discuss faith, family, love, and community focused around this time of year. Heart-warming stories are shared, discussion about the reason for the season, and activity ideas for your family are all shared. We also highlight downtown Caldwell, Idaho and explore what makes Caldwell so magical this time of year.

The City of Caldwell is set to use over one million LED lights in its 12th annual Winter Wonderland celebration.

“The display of Winter Wonderland is truly like no other in the Treasure Valley, let alone the Western United States,” said Mayor Garret Nancolas. “It’s spectacular to see families enjoying the lights, time together and the community coming together each year. It’s what Caldwell is all about.”

The light display started in 2007 with just 20,000 lights and has now grown to over one million.

More from the City of Caldwell on Winter Wonderland:

"In addition to the tree and creek lighting, Winter Wonderland Festival attendees can also participate in family-friendly activities throughout downtown from 5 to 10 p.m. Indian Creek Plaza will host free pictures with Santa in addition to skating on Idaho’s only Ice Ribbon and Rink (normal fees apply). Characters from the Frozen 2 film, including a live reindeer, will be holding a meet and greet at The Luxe Reel Theatre. Carolers, choirs, musicians, and bands will be placed throughout downtown performing holiday music. Main Street and 7th Avenue will be turned into a food court and market with over 15 food and 50 good vendors. Caldwell’s historic train depot will also be open to tour and our downtown businesses and restaurants will be open."

Parking will be available at the O'Connor Field House, also known as the Caldwell Events Center.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook and Ivanka Trump visit Idaho School District with Jeff Dillon // S2E6

Apple CEO, Tim Cook and Ivanka Trump visit Idaho School District with Jeff Dillon // S2E6

Every student learns at their own pace and at their own level.

With recent visits from Apple CEO, Tim Cook and Ivanka Trump, there are some incredible things going on in The Wilder School district. Jeff Dillon and the Wilder School District is truly innovating education through disruption. Jeff Dillon is the Wilder School District Superintendent and Principal. This episode, we go behind the scenes with Jeff and dive into all that is being accomplished in Wilder.

Make sure to buy tickets to the movie their students made airing at the Egyptian Theater in Boise on December 15th: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wizard-of-oz-premiere-tickets-83253452317

Jeff Dillon was raised in Wilder, Idaho on a small farm. Attended Holmes Elementary for kindergarten through sixth grade then transferred to Greenleaf Friends Academy and graduated in 1984. He then went to Washington where he earned his undergraduate degree in Behavioral Science from Northwest University. He has served many communities as a Pastor and Youth Pastor for 17 years. Following his passion for teaching, he returned to school and in 2001 he received his Masters degree in Teaching from Heritage University and taught Middle School Science and Reading in a Title 1 District.

Most recently, Mr. Dillon has successfully led his team to a partnership with the Apple Corporation in being identified as an Apple ConnectED school district. This partnership has brought to the District a commercial upgrade in technology infrastructure, professional development for all staff, iPads for all students PreK-12, and internal controls to support and monitor all devices 24/7. This increased technology has allowed the district to lead the state in innovation, offering success for every student in providing a district wide personalized competency-based education environment. In 2016 Mr. Dillon was invited to the White House for a conversation with Leading Districts in Innovations in Personalized Learning.

In addition to his leadership within the District, Jeff is the Chairman for Idaho Association of School Administrators Legislative Priorities Committee; member of the AASA Personalized Learning Cohort; AASA Collaborative; AASA Rural Superintendents Steering Committee; Strategic Advisory Committee; Board-Savvy Superintendent; Co-owner of a consulting company, Rural American Resources for Education; and is a national education leadership speaker. Most recently Jeff has presented at the Idaho Title 1 Conference, Global MindED Education Conference and the Atlantic Education Summit in Washing DC.

As the school district looks forward to the release of their full length movie, please come out and support! It took a small army of young voice actors from Idaho schools to perform the 15 roles for the animated characters for The WonderGrove Wizard of Oz! Students auditioned for the roles, the casting team chose the voice actors, then the actors memorized their lines, rehearsed and brought each character to life with a quality performance. They created the beautiful backgrounds and animated the characters.

We'll look forward to sharing, Dorothy, a sixth grader, worried about going to middle school, with our audience. Come, bring your children and follow the yellow brick road with us, at The Historic Egyptian Theater .

Living Legacy with Tom Sr. // S2E5

Living Legacy with Tom Sr. // S2E5

"Legacy is not leaving something for people. It’s leaving something in people." — Peter Strople

This weeks episode, we sit down with Tom Ahlquist, Sr,  the VP Construction at BVA Development and father of Tommy Ahlquist. At some point in your career you reach a point where you no longer need to include a bio.

In this podcast, we dive into what it means to live a legacy and pass it on to future generation and we have Tom Sr. explain some of his  "Tom-isms". You'll love the back and forth between our guest and co-hosts. This lively conversation is filled with real life stories and meaningful lessons.

Heads up - this episode does have a few cuss words.... but it is fairly limited. Enjoy!
