Gordon State College Humanities and Fine and Performing Arts opens their season with a 3-day performance of Playwright Douglas Jones’ “Frankenstein Lives” on October 25th - 27th at 6:30pm at the Fine Arts Theatre. Following Wednesday’s, October 26th performance will be a Gala Community Night, where special artist and playwright guest Jones will join GSC Assistant Professor of English Dr. Erik McCarthy for a “talk back” discussion session.

“Frankenstein Lives” is a play written by Jones that chronicles the life of an English novelist of the 19th century, Mary Shelley, leading up to the book that made her famous, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.

“Douglas Jones’ telling of Mary Shelley’s life and her story Frankenstein is a window into the beginnings of science fiction wrapped up in a thrilling one act play,” said GSC Director of Theatre, Lisa Cesnik Ferguson.

Jones has written more than forty plays and screenplays including the musical “Bojangles,” “The Turn of The Screw,” and his award-winning “Songs from Bedlam.” His film “1607: A Nation Takes Root” is on display at Jamestown Settlement & Yorktown Victory Center.

“At the tender age of eighteen, Mary Shelley wrote a story so compelling that it has never since been out of print. Surrounded by exciting breakthroughs in electricity, chemistry, magnetism, and other scientific fields, she imagined a Creature pieced together from dead bodies then brought to life, only to be shunned by its creator,” Jones said.

GSC’s production of “Frankenstein Lives” features Tia Perry, information technology major from Newton County, as Mary Shelley and The Creature. Riley Deel, theatre major from Pike County, portrays Percy Shelley and Victor Frankenstein. The production is directed by Ferguson, designed by Professor of Theatre Tony Pearson, and assistant directed by Madi Keener, GSC sophomore. Stage managers and technicians are GSC students Lexi Blake, Justin Valentine and Jack Whitaker. Program art was designed by McCarthy.

Admission to “Frankenstein Lives” is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for children 12 and under, and complimentary admission for all Gordon students, faculty and staff. Refreshments will be provided at Gala Community Night.

The 2022-23 GSC theatre season is made possible in part through a generous grant from Upson EMC in Thomaston, Georgia and Board of Trustees member, Dan White, with the endowed Constance H. Chinery Fine and Performing Arts Support Fund.
