Millions of people fled their homes in Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022. In response, the Diocese of Oxford partnered with Citizens UK, resettling over 200 Ukrainian refugees with hosts across Thames Valley. Many more churches and individuals have welcomed Ukrainians through drop-in events, befriending, helping with practical needs, and teaching English. A huge number of Ukrainian guests have been supported to find independent accomodation and many continue to foster deep friendships with their hosts even after moving out.

The war in Ukraine continues, and many more Ukrainians wish to seek refuge in the UK through the Homes for Ukraines scheme, which was extended by the UK government at the start of 2024. However, with very few new hosts coming forward, the Diocese has made the difficult decision to roll down our Homes for Ukraine response. It is still possible to become a host through Citizens UK or offer wider support to new Ukrainian arrivals through local churches. There are also many other opportunities to support other refugees and asylum seekers who live across the Thames Valley area.
