Cancer treatment often takes a team of health professionals to coordinate and provide comprehensive support for patients. At NYU College of Dentistry, dentists are increasingly being considered an important part of cancer care teams.

Patients with mental illness tend to experience higher rates of oral diseases and poorer treatment outcomes compared to other patients. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, School of Dental Medicine will lead a team of health care professionals to investigate the possible link between mental health issues and poor oral health.

 

At an advisory board meeting for the Carl Sandburg College’s Dental Hygiene Program a few years ago, one dentist noted the need to train incoming hygienists on office etiquette and professionalism. This sparked the idea for the Employability Skills Academy to be included as an option for students.

 

Since 2005, the Northwest Dental Residency Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program has addressed the challenges practicing dentists face by providing advanced training, cutting-edge technologies and breaking down barriers to advanced dental services in rural communities and the patients in need.
