The Miami New Media Festival celebrates 20 years in the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia

This year, the Miami New Media Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary with a special edition in the context of the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. It will be at the “Personal Structures” exhibition organized by the European Cultural Centre (ECC) in Venice from April 20th until November 24th, 2024, in Palazzo Bembo.

That’s why its curatorial theme recalls the Biennial’s “Foreigners Everywhere” theme through a unique selection of the most representative video artworks from the Festival’s twenty years of history. It includes works from Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Italia, México, Nigeria, Portugal, Venezuela, and the USA. This event is in addition to the traditional open call from July to September. The curators are Andreina Fuentes Angarita, Gerardo Zavarce and Milagros González.

The special guest is the Food of War collective, integrated by Hernán Barros, Omar Castañeda, and Andreina Fuentes Angarita, with the  “Journey of Labels” project, an artistic action in various locations in Venice. It challenges conventional perceptions of migration, social status, and identity in a world perpetually in flux. It invites viewers to delve into a transformative journey where black men take on the roles of Gondoliers, rewriting the narrative of an iconic Venetian tradition. This video performance underscores the multifaceted nature of immigration, transcending simplistic categorizations of “expat,” “immigrant,” “foreigners,” or “refugee.” Invites to reflect on the power of art to dismantle barriers and initiate dialogues about equality and social justice.
